X60 SATA interface

#1 Post by jiopsi » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:25 am

What kind of SATA interface X60 has with HDD? I have SATA HDD, but it's currently in UDMA5 mode? I tried change BIOS setting, combability mode to AHCI but XP doesn't boot with this. Do I need to reinstall XP in AHCI-mode to enable SATA-mode of the drive?

You need the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-70477

The instructions for your situation are after "Note" in the Windows XP Clean Install Section.

Ok, so I need to reinstall, but first slipstream the driver to SP3 media.

No, you don't have to do that if you don't want to. I've just installed XP and W2K on a dual boot system using a USB floppy with the Intel SATA drivers on it. Once the install was complete I installed the SP's.

NT's install routine will ask very early if you have a 3rd party driver to install (e.g your SATA driver). Hit F6 when prompted and later and you'll be asked for the drivers.

BTW, as a side note:
I am not at all happy with the SATA read/write performance numbers on this PC (X60, 2GHz C2D, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD). MY T41 or X31 will SMOKE this until with most read/write speed tests, some by a factor of three or more!! (e.g. write @ 45MB/s IDE, 15MB/s SATA)

Everything appears to work fine, all devices good (no red or yellow symbols) but performance scores (CrystalDiskMark) are awful. Was actually thinking about changing BIOS from AHCI to compatibility mode!!
This may be something you'll want to look further into before your install.

Yeah, but I don't have floppy drive. Slipstreamed it to SP3 media and reinstalled XP on AHCI mode. Seems to work properly. Took two hours with all drivers according last post time. :D

thanks for the help everyone

Here is for fun some comparisons. I will probably move Intel 40GB SSD to this, but according to PCmark05 difference in my 60GB 5K100 is about 20% in SATA to UDMA5 mode.

Your disk is only 5400 RPM - SATA wouldn't even think of breaking into a sweat for that model.
X60 - upgraded to a X61 2.5Ghz motherboard and 8GB RAM (Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit) 64GB SSD
X61 - 2Ghz and 4GB RAM (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit) 32GB SSD
USB DVD-RW DL/Blu-Ray reader
