x60s bluetooth not working post-SP3

#1 Post by peter-h » Fri Apr 30, 2010 1:54 am

About a year ago I "updated" the OS with SP3.

As with thousands of other computers around the world, this trashed the hard drive. To cut a long story short, after wasting several days on various recoveries I restored (with Trueimage) an image backup from about a year previously.

This worked fine but something had trashed something on the bluetooth radio or software.

Now, it detects devices OK but when I try to Connect (e.g. using a mobile phone as a modem, on dial up networking) it fails at that point with some obscure error message. The same phone connects via USB just fine.

I tried all kinds of things e.g. updating the bluetooth firmware from the Lenovo website.

So now I have an excellent laptop (which I use for all kinds of "serious" stuff to do with flight planning) but all connections have to be via USB.

Has anybody else come across this?

I am running winXP with SP2 and I am absolutely not going to try SP3 again because this machine is too valuable.

Unfortunately bluetooth is an easy (or easier) connect with XP (Pro?) SP3 and has all kinds of problems
with SP2.
With SP3 no additional drivers are needed and once bluetooth is turned on (Fn+F5) it starts working.
I can't understand why you had difficulties updating to SP3 with a properly validated copy of Windows,
unless there is something about UK Windows that is different to the US one.
Assuming that all is well with your bluetooth, and it shows up in device manager, then I'd find a way
to get updated to SP3. Maybe Windows 7 is an even better upgrade.

I tried SP3 again yesterday evening and again it trashed the laptop. It blue-screens with a REGISTRY ERROR each time.

Luckily I did an image just before I did that.... restoring that right now.

This is an x60s 1704 (the one with the GPRS/3G radio built-in). A very nice machine.

I've ordered a USB bluetooth radio
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0401383105

and will give that one a try... it is small enough to be left in one of the USB ports permanently.

Edit: I have gone to windoze update once more and this time downloaded the 6 "optional" hardware updates; they were non-specific but I thought that since I have just done an image backup I have nothing to lose. Sure enough, one of these fixed the bluetooth stack and now it works fine. Still on SP2...

One can waste half one's life fixing IT issues like this :)
