x60s bluetooth not working post-SP3

About a year ago I "updated" the OS with SP3.
As with thousands of other computers around the world, this trashed the hard drive. To cut a long story short, after wasting several days on various recoveries I restored (with Trueimage) an image backup from about a year previously.
This worked fine but something had trashed something on the bluetooth radio or software.
Now, it detects devices OK but when I try to Connect (e.g. using a mobile phone as a modem, on dial up networking) it fails at that point with some obscure error message. The same phone connects via USB just fine.
I tried all kinds of things e.g. updating the bluetooth firmware from the Lenovo website.
So now I have an excellent laptop (which I use for all kinds of "serious" stuff to do with flight planning) but all connections have to be via USB.
Has anybody else come across this?
I am running winXP with SP2 and I am absolutely not going to try SP3 again because this machine is too valuable.
