a laptop versus tablet comaprision

#1 Post by sysbox27 » Thu Jun 03, 2010 10:07 am

Hi,
I am considering buying an X6x tablet, but before I go any further I was wondering if those of you using such could give me your comments on what it is like to use.

What do you use your tablet functionality for?
What apps?
Anyone using OneNote? What is that like to use? Can you take fast notes using this?
Any major differences between for example the X60 and X60T?
Any recommendations regards what is best tablet to get?

All feedback much appreciated.

Best regards.

sysbox27:

I have a very specific application for my tablet - I'm a teacher and use it to teach classes. I prefer this method because it allows me to face the class instead of writing on a blackboard with my back to the class and talking to the wall. Students comment favorably since they can see the projection screen better than they can see a blackboard, they can hear better, and they have access to the lecture material in electronic form. After doing this for about 5 years, it's about the only time that I use the tablet features; the rest of the time the tablet is used as a standard notebook computer.

OneNote is the killer tablet application and what I use for preparing and presenting content. Students in my courses who have tablet PCs also prefer OneNote for taking notes in class. It's a must-have application if you have a tablet PC.

I don't have any experience with the X60T but a couple of my colleagues have them and like them. I have owned the X41T and now have an X61T. I really like the X61T; it's the fastest PC that I currently own.

If you want to do further research on which tablet model to use then also go visit GottaBeMobile.com and do some viewing of video demos and some reading. Have fun!

Tablets also have a wacom digitizer built in, so if you're an artist, tablet makes wonderful drawing devices. There are comparisons of tablet PC's with wacom cintiq's(wacom built into a screen), and there's basically no difference between the 256 pressure levels vs 1000 pressure levels. I'm pulling these numbers off the top of my head, but the idea is there.

My first tablet was X40T, then I got an X60T, now I own X61T. Performance-wise X60T and X61T are very similar. However, my X61T has a SXGA+ screen with bonded front panel, a great improvement over stock X60T screen. Since there is no air gap between the LCD and protecting front panel, visibility is much better. 1400x1050 screen provides about 166dpi resolution, excellent for reading and annotating pdf documents in tablet mode. I am using the tablet mode mainly for annotating pdf articles for my academic purposes. I am using the PDF Annotator from GRAHL software. Another use is when I am teaching at the university. Just like K0LO, I use OneNote to do interactive sessions with students.

I tried sketching on my tablet PC, but good old paper and pen combo is always more responsive. Again, for photo editing I'd rather use my mouse.

I have both 6cell and 4cell batteries. In tablet mode I prefer unplugging and using it with 6cell battery. Otherwise 4cell is on it. My better half has a X60s, with slim 4cell battery it is a much more portable option (if you don't want the tablet capability).
