Question about X60 dead bios/chip location

#1 Post by RhynoX » Thu Jun 03, 2010 10:25 pm

Hi, it´s my first post here, and i am sorry for my bad english in advance.

I have a completely dead(and unfortunately out of warranty) X60. I was updating its bios from ver. 2.06 to 2.18 wich is the last one i think. I was using windows 7, lenovo bios update, battery 100% charged, the notebook was docked and I was using an external monitor. Everything went fine during the update process, and in the final, it asked me to reboot the machine, i rebooted it and it hanged during post with the cooler running at max speed. I waited 5 minutes, no response, power button was not working, so I removed the baterry, and now its completely dead, no image, no lights, nothing, only hard drive running.

Well the bios is obviusly dead, and i have a few questions, first, where is it physically located on the motherboard? What´s the type of this chip, TSOP or SOIC8? Can I just replace this chip with one from a X60S motherboard that is protected with password and I can buy for cheap(as far as i know the password is stored in a separate chip...)?
Is there any issue with the TPM chip while replacing the bios chip? Someone told me that they must be replaced together from another motherboard.

Well that´s it for now, thanks in advance. :(

Discussion of this topic probably violates the rules regarding passwords, hacking, etc. In order to save you the effort, I will tell you that replacing the BIOS chip will give you 4 sets of 4 beeps (security error) and the machine will not boot. I have seen many tales of people turning machines into bricks by flashing the BIOS under windoes 7. This thread is now locked
