X60 do I need BIOS update for Windows 7?

Hi,

I have an X60 with BIOS at 2.15. Lenovo website says 2.18 supports Windows 7. However, I have had Vista running in a dual boot with XP. Do I really need to update the BIOS to 2.18?

Reason. This is a dual purpose laptop. It's primarily a work laptop but I have a second drive with XP/Vista. The work hard drive has the drive encrypted with Safeboot and it seems that updating the BIOS might break that. I don't want to chance that at this point in time.

Thanks in advance!

If it ain't broke don't fix it :). I've never seen a decent description of what the W7 BIOS updates do exactly as far as compatibility. If I were in your shoes I'd not change the BIOS, particularly if a critical function is dependent on it. Try W7 without the BIOS update.

I always do the BIOS upgrade to the latest version. It's very easy with System Update and Win XP. On X60s the lates BIOS makes the on-screen controls like volume and display brightness bar very fast. I can recommend the upgrade.. We're not in DOS days and it's safe and very easy if you follow the instructions.

BTW the latest BIOS brings a support for the virtualization technology, better W7 compatibility, faster response of the on-screen indicators in W7 if you press volume up/down or screen brightness up/down and many more.. :-)
