How do the multimedia buttons work (Fn+arrow keys)

Hi folks,

I use VLC media player on my Win7 X60t, and I'd like to be able to play/pause/rewind/fastforward the player when it is minimized: I assume that is what the multimedia buttons are for.

Im wondering if its perhaps a driver issue or that VLC is not compatible with these keys?

For what it's worth, sometimes the VLC doesn't pick up my hotkeys under Linux too. Totem and Rhythmbox work perfectly though.
