X61 Tablet problems

So I've got an X61 tablet in front of me, 7764-CTO, it's got Vista business on it.

The screen is going to be the death of me.

So at first, the LCD backlits were decided to be the problem, but since it's a laptop LCD, the only thing I could do at a time was get a new LCD.

So it worked for about 10 minutes, then the backlights went out on me again.

So then I decided to get a new inverter.

Still no light from the cathodes.

I'm not in the mood to drop more money on this thing, but could someone tell me what needs to be done?

Going nuts here, anything will help me out.

I am assuming the backlight does not work when you just go to the BIOS (to rule out software issue). There are 4 parts involved: The LCD, The inverter, the cable and the motherboard. I have a spare motherboard and try the LCD assembly there. That makes the problem easy to isolate, but New Jersey is a long way from San Francisco. It might be a cracked wire in the cable, but I hate to suggest replacing parts one at a time.
