Hi

When I say "shutdown" I don't mean the Windows XP normal shutdown routine. I mean I get a black screen and the computer is off in 1 second.

Its a IntelCore Duo L7700@1800
Runs Win 64 bit
4 Gbyte memory
500 Gbyte hdd @ 7000 rpm
Biosversjon 2.21 09.11.04

Computer is docked in UltraBay, externalt monitor at 1920x1200
Wlan is switched of, using TP cable when docked.

I think it is an overheating issue. I downloaded TPFanControl 64 bit to monitor the CPU temp and it looks like I'm normally in the 60 (celsius idle) and when working with low load computer runs smooth with no sutdowns. Temp rice to 70 ++ when doing heavy work. When rising to 73-74 Celsius the computer shuts down. So I think that there is a connection between temp and shut down, but of course I'm not shure but what else could it be?

I've taken out the battery (connecting directly to A/C power)
I have cleaned fan and heat sink grill
I have changed CPU termal paste to Arctic Silver 3 with no change in temperature. I did not change gpu cooling paste
I have set fan speed to high and TPFanSpeed is repporting 4678 rpm.
I can hear the fan, but the flow is not impressive, can hardly feel the air.

I hope that I can cet some help from you, I realy don't know what more to do?

Sounds like the fan needs a drop of oil (not the WD-40 type).
When you turn the fan blades by hand do they spin and stop without resistance?
If not then put a drop of light machine oil in the bearing slot and see if that improves the flow.
Then see about replacing it.

If it's an overheating issue, run a heavy stress test like Prime 95 Small FFT. It should shut down almost instantly then.

The only time I've EVER seen an X60s (Core 2 Duo) actually shut down was when I forcibly disable throttling, and it hit 94C on the CPU. Otherwise it throttled by around 92C until the temps dropped, and the CPU started working at full speed again.

There is no way it should be shutting down before 90C.

What is a normal fanspeed whne going on full speed (in TFPC manual mode 7)?
I have on level 7 running on battery speed is 4436 rpm.


I dont know if it acctually is a heat issue, can it be something else?

IvanAndreevich: you have some experience, can i ask if you have any idea what i can do with this heat issue?

I think cpu shutdown is at 100c

That speed sounds pretty normal to me. Either way, if you've applied AS3 you should be getting good temps. Maybe your heat sink is warped somehow? When you applied AS3, does it make good contact all across the core?

What is your idle temperature if you set it to Mode 7? It should be 40-something at most.

Run a heavy CPU stress test, and see if it shuts down right away. Then you know it's the CPU overheating for sure.

Yeah from the Intel spec it's 100C. However, looks like Lenovo decided to shut down at around 95C in my experience based on a faulty X60s with a L7400 CPU.

well i did a new dismount because it was accutally only one thing left to check, heat transfer from prosessor to cooling rib.

I applied a litle more arctic silver 3, and suddenly temp is more normal. (this is a knife in mye self respect is this mistake possible....)

I did run a burn in test for 15 minutes, both cores 100%, max temp 81 degrees.

When working with office application and fan is run by BIOS the temp is 65. Fan is now running with speed 4691, when running burn inn fan did run about 5500 rpm.

For the future, it's best to do the job two times.
