Soldered. You'll need to replace the whole board. It's the with all the X series notebooks.

The question is why would you even want to? Want a performance boost - get more RAM, and get an SSD.

I wouldn't mind upgrading my cpu on the X61t to 2.5ghz if I could. Then upgrading to a 300GB SSD..

just got an intel G2 but costs way too much money to upgrade for all (obviously this is the best upgrade).

I was just looking for a quick fix to makes things better.

I guess when you love thinkpads like we all do, we just like tinkering with it. Will a CPU significantly help performance? probably not but I love to have the bragging rights....haha

Should I keep running xp pro on my x6 series or should I upgrade them to Win 7 pro 64? If I was looking strictly from a performance point of view.

Which model is it? The Core Duos dont support 64-bit extensions as far as I understand, but Core 2 Duos do.

I've been thinking about that too. I decided to stick with my XP pro that came with the machine. Its a generally lighter OS. Even though 7 is a lot better than vista I think it is still a bit more needy than XP is.

So my desktop runs 7 and my laptop runs XP which is good for older hardware that doesn't have vista / 7 drivers.

I would say stick with the windows XP it came with.

But maybe try 7 and see if it works well. It might be all the better.

I'd recommend Win7. I'm using it on my X60s and it works great. With Aero enabled the user interface response is very fast (much more convenient than XP) and file operations seems to be faster as well. All drivers works just fine, overall it's a great system for X6 series machines.

I have two x60, x60s, and one x61s

The question is which CPUs you have in your X60/s. Some came with 32bit CD, some with 64bit C2D. X61/s are always C2D.

On 32bit CPUs you can still install Win7 32bit.

And what CPU would that be? It has to have an 800 mhz FSB, and be a <25W chip to be compatible with an X61T even in principle. Something like that doesn't exist. If an SP9600 was available in 800 mhz FSB, that would fit the bill. I'm sure that an SP9600 is expensive and hard to find. Face it - there isn't really anything you can upgrade the CPU to, even if you could

I do software development on my x61t, so any extra power would be nice. Even if it was the 1.8ghz which is an option (if bought new x61t). I have a quad core 2.4ghz desktop so I didn't think ahead to get a faster x61t when I bought it. Little did I know that I would use my x61t more often...

I'm not a fan of the newer x201 build so I'm holding out for a little longer. (Don't like the widescreen format for programming.) I will be upgrading to the new Intel G3 SSD when it comes out in (hopefully) a couple of months.

I don't care for WS either but I got an X201 to replace my X61 specifically for the CPU and especially GPU boost (i7 @2.66 GHz vs. C2D @2.0 GHz and GMA X3100 vs. GMA HD).
CPU is also why I didn't get the s- or tablet versions (much as I would have liked to have the higher-res screens).

I've used one machine which is both thin-and-light, and powerful - that's the T400s with an SSD. 1440x900, and a 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo. That's something to consider for around $8-900 they go for right now.

for my x61s, I'm thinking about installing Win 7 64 bit only if the 8gb ram would be worth the upgrade in terms of performance. Costwise, I know it's a no but maybe in the future.

My X60s has a Core Duo, and does not support a 64 bit OS. I believe the great majority of the X60s has that CPU, and that the chip set is limited to 3 GB ram. Just saying...

The unfortunate thing is that the chipset is limited to 3GB RAM even if the CPU is 64bit.

I'm running 7 x64 on X61T and 7 32-bit on T42p with 2GB of RAM. Win7 didn't feel slower than my old XP install on T42p.

Win7 didn't feel slower than XP on my eight-year-old X24. It's gotta be some sort of black magic going on under the hood.

You are probably waiting on the harddrive on most desktop apps.
Ssd will provide the boost, not the cpu, esp when it comes to laptop harddrives.
