looking for pics... X6 tablet without displaybezel

#1 Post by u.mac » Thu Nov 11, 2010 8:53 am

Hi,

My X60t needs a build-in webcam and think-light in laptop-mode... Lenovo forgot these nice features 8)

I found a used, very cheap Bison-cam from Acer Aspire 7310 with USB-connector. The same cam you'll get in Lenovo G550.

Removing the X60t displaybezel isn't easy... so I want first take a view to some pics to find out a place for my cam (X60t comes up with sxga+, wifi, wwan + FPR). Maybe I've to remove the FPR to get a free USB-connector and some free place... maybe there's a place for the cam (and, I hope, for a little USB hub :D)

So I'm looking for pictures from a X6 tablet without displaybezel :D

Ciao Uwe

Hi Uwe,
if you can't find these pictures, in a few days I will change my x61 tablet XGA LCD with a SXGA+ ,so I will take some pictures for you if you can use them.

Did you figure out something about think-light ? I really need one on my tablet but I want to be powered from Fn+PgUp button and this is the trickiest part .

Great idea... yes, please post some pictures :D

ThinkLight... our tablets will never work with Fn+PgUp, because the displaycableconnector is in use for the digitizer. The connector on the mainboard for the digitizer is the same as in X60(s)/X61(s) for the ThinkLight. So the electronic on the mainboard or BIOS must be different :( .

So I'll try a very simple way . The FPR is connected to USB, where we we'll find 5V+/-. With 2 cables, a little LED + matching resistor and a simple microswitch(*) under a little hole for pressing with the digitizer-pen I hope to get the forgotten ThinkLight

Ok - this "solution" is not very smart, but an easy job. I've to find the right LED, the right place and the right temperature to form the bezel... and the right "design" for both holes (and I have a NOS displaybezel for emergency, if the mod doesn't look well ).

Edit: (*) or an "open switch" like the resetswitch or the other switches in the displaybezel

Sorry for delay but yesterday I received my SXGA+ LCD and today I've succeeded to install it.

BTW it is f@@@ing beautiful with that resolution. I really didn't know what I've been missing with the old XGA LCD. The desktop is soo big now :D !
And I've managed to transfer the touchscreen as well as a digitizer from the old to new lcd so now I have an SXGA with touch and digitizer    .

Here you are the pictures as I promise. I've took a pictures mainly from the LCD's upper side where is most of the free space for the web cam you want to install.

Free space depth and width is about 10 mm as I've shown on the first picture. The back side of the bezel is nearly flat. It will be easy to put some wires at the back or around the LCD - there is enough room for that.

I've took a close picture of the locking mechanism to show you where a tiny 0603 or 0805 SMD LED with a ribbon wire can be placed. The spot with red line is free of obstructions and can be used so not to drill the bezel.

I wish you luck with your mod !

Thanks for the excellent pictures :thumbs-UP:

In your case is enough free room for a webcam. My tablet comes up with 3 WLAN antennas and 2 WWAN antennas, so I've to take the bezel away to find a way. Maybe I've to replace one or more antennas.

ThinkLight in locking mechanism seems to be difficult when switching to tablet mode without damage on cable. If I find a solution, it's really a good place. I think, I've to look for a second locking mechanism.

Please tell... how did you take the bezel away without damage?

That's Awesome!

I have an X60t with the SXGA+ screen. Could you tell me how difficult it would be to add the touch panel to my laptop to make it like yours?

i.e. What additional parts do I need and how long did it take you in labor to do the modification.

thanks!

To Uwe :
look at this clip it might help you for disassemble : http://vimeo.com/3933798
the most important is to know that the bezel is glued to the LCD with a double sided sticky strip so be gentle due to disassemble. The other problem are side clips - be careful with them, don't rush, take your time and use some hard plastic plate to unlock them. Dont use knife cause you can scratch the bezel. Sorry that I don't film the process but hope that the clip above will help you.

jingorm - it works for me because I had 7767 BFG model which came with a XGA Multitouch screen. Basically the existing touchscreen is connected to the digitizer PCB . There are 2 types of digitizers for x61 tablet - one is with connector for touch and the other not, so you need the first one. In my case I've bought a naked SXGA+ LCD and moved the existing digitizer and touch on it.
The touch glass is glued to the LCD metal frame with a double sided sticky tape strips (about 5mm wide) across its 4 edges so in order to unglue it you have to use very thin metal blade to cut the sticky tape between lcd and touch ( i've used a blade from a used gillette shaver razor for a single use I don't know the exact name in english ). After taking off the touch glass clean it well from any dust ,stains and remaining glue , apply new double sided sticky tape and glue it on a new screen in exactly same position. Take care to work in a dust free room with rubber gloves in order to prevent any soil to stick between the lcd and touch glass.
The whole time for that mod was about 2 hours ,mostly for the un-glue because I was very careful not to broke the thin touch glass.
I really don't know from where you can buy the parts for this mod if you don't have an XGA multitouch screen for donor.

Keep in mind that basically it is a pain to use a touchscreen on a SXGA resolution because of a small icons but in some software with bigger icons it is usable.

Let me make a suggestion about the keyboard light: HP has a great keyboard light implementation in their new Elitebook series where the keyboard light is built is built into the bezel and the actual light is also the switch - you push the light in and it pops out at an angle that points right at the keyboard and turns on as it comes out just like with a fridge. The light is also a microswitch which is just brilliant - all you need is power.

Image here with video here: bit about light starts at about 5:50 minutes.
