Getting to know my new x60.

#1 Post by cksubs » Tue Nov 16, 2010 3:37 pm

Hi all, just picked up a x60. I have a x30 which I love, but picked this one up cheap (it has a splotchy screen) in order to run Win7's Aero, potentially install the higher res display, and install an SSD.

I have a couple questions, mainly related to build differences between it and the x30:

What is the semi-translucent black thing on the right side of the screen? Some kind of antenna, or IR receiver? Can I do anything cool with this, or does it just add weight? Is there a port-cover available for the space?

The right palm rest gets HOT. Known issue it seems, related to the wifi card. If I were to completely remove the wifi card, would this be significantly fixed? Has anyone tried using a tiny USB wifi dongle, does it limit performance greatly?

I've set my "Screen Close" action to "hibernate"... but the screen remains on when I've closed the lid. Is something stopping the screen closing from being sensed by the computer?

Does anyone have a SVGA+ cable they would sell me?

I think that's it for now, I'll post other questions here as I start using the laptop!

Based on what I know.
The translucent thing on the right side of the lid is an additional antenna,
assuming it hasn't been broken off, for cell phone G3 networks. Verizon etc depending on what
service you get. It's also part of the N WiFi, IIRC. You'll need the correct card installed for G3
pickup.
That card slots in next to the WiFI card so even more heat is generated!
Removing the WiFi card and using a USB or PCMCIA WiFi card will reduce heat at the expense
of convenience.
To the right of the LCD cable on the machine side is a small square cut out. In it is a sensor
that senses when the lid closes. Either the sensor is broken (fairly common) or the sensor is
not in the correct position to 'see' the lid. You'll have to remove the keyboard and the
upper bezel to see if it has shifted. You'll have to get a new LCD cable if it's broken.

Good luck

I don't know if you can buy the port cover. But my x60 doesn't have the side wireless antenna for 3g or whatever, and the spot does have the cutout but is covered.

There is a thread about reducing the heat from the palm rest. I've done some of those, and combined with "getting used to it" its now not an issue for me.
X61 and (retired)600x.
