I installed an MC8765 on my x60s using the driver from the Lenovo website and it only appears as a network adapter in the device mgr. Should it appear as a modem also? I'd like to use it with a windows dial-up network connection.

I don't know the specific answer for a MC8765, but I can tell you that on my T400, with Windows 7..... both my built-in Ericsson F3507g 3G device and my external USB Sierra 880U 3G device show
Device Manager entries in both the
Network Adapter and
Modem categories. The
Modem category entries are identified as
ports.

My Sierra cards (MC8755 and MC 8775) appear as 2 COM ports, a network device and a modem.
That is, they should appear as a modem. Sometimes when installing the drivers they don't.
Usually this works:
- add new hardware in control panel
- after Windows didn't find it say it is installed, select modem, select "have drivers", point to the folder where the Lenovo drivers for the Sierra card are
After Windows installed the modem set it's COM port to the one of the sierra COM ports that says something like "AT commands".

Thanks, I tried your suggestion but windows does not recognize any files as modem drivers. Does anybody know what the modem driver and file type is? So far, the card will only install as a network adapter and a few com ports, but not as a modem device. Thanks.

Download and install the Sierra Wireless 3G Watcher (Generic). It has the full set of drivers drivers built-in for most of the cards, so the MC8765 should also be included. Here is the link:
