Confusion about the available screens on x6x series
Confusion about the available screens on x6x series
I'm looking for an x6x, preferably an x61 to replace my current machine. I don't have any use for 1024x768, just not enough work area and it won't have the crisp lettering I have now (T40p, 14", 1400x1050). I've read that x60 & x61 are all 1024x768 except for the tablets, but here I see a posting about a high-res x60. Was there a p series with better specs?
What's the scoop? And is there a reliable seller who would have an X61 w high res?

Re: Confusion about the available screens on x6x series
If you saw a SXGA+ X6x machine, it was modded to take the SXGA+. It's quite an involved and expensive process. If you want SXGA+ you're probably better off just getting one of the tablets with SXGA+, though they are harder to find and carry somewhat of a premium. You can post in the marketplace forum here to see if anyone's got one they'd like to sell. Occasionally, they do appear here. ebay is another option. There are some other tablets like the Fujitsu T4220, which also offered a 12" SXGA+, though I don't know if the panel quality is as good as the X6xt. They are quite good. Lastly, if you can live with WXGA, the X20x machines might be worth a look. Good Luck.

I'm not familiar with X20x, what is the build quality and how much does one sell for?FredGarvin wrote:If you saw a SXGA+ X6x machine, it was modded to take the SXGA+. Re: Confusion about the available screens on x6x series
The days when it made sense to modify an X6x for a higher resolution screen are behind us! From battery life, to 64-bit operation, to weight, to the convenience of getting what you want right "out of the box", it is hard to beat the X200s with the 12.1” WXGA+ (1440 X 900) resolution. Here is a new one for $1000:

[Note: If you intend to use any internal WLAN or WWAN cards that are not on the machine's "approved" list, then pick an X200s, not an X201s, since there exists a modified BIOS for the X200 series which will permit all wireless cards, but no such modified BIOS exists for the X201 series.]

There's a limit as to sane spending on an obsolete computer - or any 2nd hand machine - and it's a small one. I bought the current machine new 8 years ago (it was a T30 which ibm replaced with this item) but am now on a far smaller budget What would you recommend for no more than $350? btw, does an X61 run a 64 bit OS?EOMtp wrote:The days when it made sense to modify an X6x for a higher resolution screen are behind us! Re: Confusion about the available screens on x6x series
X20x refers refers to either the X200 or X201 Thinkpads. The X20x machine offers a WXGA screen, which is a better than XGA resolution wise. The plus is you can do the AFFS mod and get a very good screen. If you want some more resolution the X200s and X201s are offered with a WXGA+ LCD.atanasoff wrote:I'm not familiar with X20x, what is the build quality and how much does one sell for?

You will not find a Thinkpad like the one you describe for $350, even on eBay. Yes, the X61[/s] will run 64-bit OS.atanasoff wrote:What would you recommend for no more than $350? btw, does an X61 run a 64 bit OS?
Re: Confusion about the available screens on x6x series
Some X60 have Core 2 Duos and will run 64 bit as well.
