X61 Blue screens after replacing fan

My X61 had some noise in the fan. So I got a new fan and fitted it yesterday.
It all seemed to go fine and I used up all the screws etc but as soon as Windows
starts loading it flips out with a blue screen and a mesage that Windows has shut
down to prevent a problem etc.

I have taken out and replaced memory chips and Hard drive, but no difference.

I have the OS on a Fat32 partition so I can run Ghost and such from a Dos
prompt if needed. The computer runs fine in Dos. I even left it on overnight
with Norton Commander's fishtank screensaver. It was still OK this morning.
The new fan runs fine

Any ideas on what it may be that freaks out like that on loading Windows?

(At this time I am not looking for advice on which file system is the best.)

What is the exact wording on the blue screen?

It is a long thing, in Swedish. It mentions removal of all hard drives or
hard drive controllers that have recently been installed, to check if the
HD may be defect, and it ends with the "Technical information"
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xBA4CF524, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I happen to have two HD's for this X61. Just now I fit in "the other one",
a SSD and that one seems to work fine. Windows has just started up and
seems to run fine.
The first drive is an ordinary HD, an Hitachi that before the fan change
ran excellently.

Do an SSD drive use a different controller than a platter drive?

CPU temperature now is around 50 C. With the old fan it was often near 70 C.

Is it possible a BIOS setting for the hard drive controller got changed from it's original AHCI mode to compatibility mode or vice-versa?

Yes that was the problem. I normally use English language Windows but
I am going to lend this machine to a friend for a while so it has a fresh
install of Swedish language XP on it. I obviously had set Bios to run in
compatibility mode during install, and just not remembered to reset to
AHCI mode.

Now I can not remember which files it is I must install to make this
disk able to use AHCI mode?

OK, so now you want to make an XP build run in AHCI mode, and that build currently boots in compatibility mode?

Exactly. I installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager from the 6iim10ww file, but no go.
I have Win XP SP3. But maybe there is a Windows patch I must apply?

You may not be aware, but that file just unpacks the Intel drivers. You must go into the folder with the extracted files and run install.cmd. Then reboot, and go immediately into BIOS. Change to AHCI, then save, reboot again. The unzipped folder will be a subfolder of C:\DRIVERS\WIN
