The slots are PCI-Express, which are smaller than mini PCI. They are about 3 cm X 5 cm. The second slot is only on some boards and it is for a WWAN card. I have not personally tried any other cards there

the second miniPCIe slot is the same size as the first one, it is used for either the wwan card or the intel turbo memory card.

Another good option for the second mini PCIe slot is a Broadcom Crystal HD card, if you want to use your X61s to playback 1080p video to a TV.

Yes. If you look at the parts your machine was assembled with here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... yle=lenovo (the link is currently down for maintenance) and look at the motherboard (planar), you can look at the hardware maintenance manual. That link is also down, so I cannot get it to send. THe board will say "with WWAN" if it has the second slot. If your board is not listed in the manual, post the part number and someone will tell you.

the other easy check to look for the sim card slot in the ram module bay, if it has the sim card slot then the second mPCIe should be present.
