How to tell fan model number

I am tired of the extremely loud fan on my X61, and I want to replace it. Ebay shows quite a few of them for sale, but they all have different model numbers. How can I determine which is the right fan model to get for my X61?

Normally, when looking for parts for your Thinkpad, you look for specific FRU or Part Numbers, not specific fan brands or fan models.

Here is a direct link to the "System service parts - ThinkPad X60, X60s, X61, X61s":
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 62906.html

Look for the "fan assembly" FRU number that corresponds to your specific Thinkpad model.

I've given you a direct link to a generic parts list. If you are looking on your own, there are two ways that one normally ends up finding these FRU part listings.

One way is to start by going to the Lenovo site and entering in the model number of your Thinkpad (a series of numbers on the bottom of your machine that look like XXXX-XXX). From that support page, you select "Parts Information", and the "System Parts". And then find the specific part you are looking for. This will give you the exact FRU for your specific model, so this is normally better than using the generic listing link I've provided above.

You can find the generic list above by starting instead with the generic "Service parts list index" page, and identifying your Thinkpad from there, and choosing "System Service Parts List":
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... d=TPAD-FRU

Once you have the FRU, you search for that specific FRU on eBay or whatever.
