My Battery Suddenly Died

#1 Post by RoxyRose » Fri Jan 21, 2011 12:38 pm

I have an X60T that I bought used off of ebay. Nice, but I unplugged the battery yesterday and all the sudden it stopped working. it was consistently giving 2hrs. It was an 8 cell.

It is stuck at 87%. It says the following:
44.69 Full charge capacity
38.59 Remaining
66.24 Design capacity
It had 427 cycles
It is giving the error "The battery has failed due to normal wear"

I know that is a lot of cycles, but I have never had a battery that just died when it was charging just fine the day before. Usually you can see it coming.

Is there something I can do to fix this? or is it new battery time? I read a thread (that I can't find now) that the OP felt that Lenovo programs these new x series batteries to die after a certain amount of cycle counts. What do you think?

Thanks for replying. I've owned Thinkpads since 1996 and never had this happen to me. Such a sudden death. This is the first Lenovo product that I have owned and I am worried about it's build quality. The latch is broken (and seemed like a bad design) and now the issue with the battery. I was hoping to find someone who knew about the issue extensively...maybe if someone knew definitively if there was a "kill switch" in these batteries and someway to undo the damage. Maybe a calibration tool or reset program. I am sure IBM/Lenovo would never release such info or program in fear of fraud, but I have a good feeling it exists because they refurbish these (most likely with new cells, but same circuit) & sell them on their website.

I didn't like the 8 cell anyway and was planning to buy a 4 cell, but I didn't want to be forced into replacing :(

My X60s also had an 8-cell battery that suddenly died. It was a common problem for the X6* series. Thank goodness my battery was still under Lenovo's 1-year warranty, but yours probably isn't. You ned a new battery.

I just purchased an X61, used, somehow through Amazon. It arrived yesterday, and for what little I paid, I was laughing about what I would get. Surprise! The machine is beautiful in "almost" every way....that almost being the 8 Cell battery. I suspect it's the original one, so it's certainly due for replacement. But what surprised me this morning, was my battery indicator on the sys tray suggested I had over 5 hours remaining. Less than 15 minutes later, the computer provided a warning, then immediately tried to suspend, and then just shut down! Oh well, I had "almost" finished a download of a driver update for it and had to do that again, but no real harm done. I can't go any further than the power cord for awhile anyway.

FWIW, I've decided to try an ebay 8-cell. I looked in the lenovo outlet store but none were available, so I figured the cheap ebay one is guaranteed for 6 months I believe; what the heck! I'll keep going back to the outlet store and pick one up when/if they're available.
