All, I'm considering buying a refurbished x60s and spent a lot of time scouring through the forums (which were very insightful). I'm a heavy Internet and MS Office user, and would ideally like to run the machine on Vista/7 and MS 2007/2010. Portability is extremely important to me and hence I'm only looking at 12.1" screen.

Here are the specs of the machine which I'm considering:

Model: T17023JU
Intel® Core™ Duo 1.66 GHz
2GB Memory
60 GB HDD
Price: $250 shipped

My questions:

1. What are the next in line 12.1" screen options I have? The only other ones I read about were X200 and X201 (which seem to be around $400-$500).
2. Is $250 a good deal on the laptop? It's refurbished and comes with a 3 month limited warranty
3. I read that I can upgrade the Memory to 4GB, but the machine description says max is 2GB. Which one is correct?

Personally, I think the X20x machines are better than X6x machines, but is that worth the extra cash? I would pay the extra, but the X6x will totally work and is much better than the new netbook options you'll find at $250.

$250 seems decent, though a lot will depend on the condition of the machine. The warranty is nice to let things shake out for a bit.

The X60 and X60s are chipset limited to 3GB. If you want to use more you'll need a X61 or better, though 3GB should be plenty for Office and Internet.

Do they provide a minimum battery time ? having to buy a new battery would be annoying.
That said I agree with FredGarvin, at that price it's hard to beat.

ps : does it have bluetooth ? an ultrabase ?

Thanks FredGarvin and fasteez. I'd probably try to upgrade memory to 3GB to get better performance, specially if I end up with Win 7 / Office 2010.

No information on the battery, though I'm hoping that it wouldn't be decent given that product is certified and with warranty. But you never know!

No bluetooth (don't really need it), or ultrabase (might buy it separately later).

Unless you're hung up on the X60s for battery life, I'd do this deal instead. The seller has been known to include an external CDRW drive, and mouse with (2) AC adapters. No warranty to speak of though.

Is your recommendation based on the additional CDRW/Mouse/AC adapter factor? Or you feel the x60 is a better machine than x60s? I did read that x60 does seem to have a more powerful processor.

BTW, what's next in line after x60/x60s (for 12.1" screens)? Is it directly x200/x201 or is there another model?

Well, it's based on a lot of experience with this seller. They are very good and back up their product. Also it's based on the extras, plus you get a faster CPU and a larger hard drive, all for less money than your original $250. The only real advantage of an X60s over an X60 is the X60s is going to have better battery life. So if that is very important to you then disregard my advice. X61 or X61s is next in line for a 12.1" screen. After that it's widescreen models, like an X200.

Even the specs for X61(s) look good, specially with the Core 2 Duo and more memory - I'm assuming it's around $75-$100 higher than X60(s).

Hi all, just joined after i bought an x60s from this place I got it at auction for $142.50 AUD + postage. 3months warranty and a usb cd-rom.

I was looking at new netbook and didn't really want to spend the $300-$400 AUD for a new one, just yet.

Then i found about the x60s and was very impressed.

It hasn't arrived yet; should tomorrow, i will let you know how it goes....

Just as an aside, that eBay seller is great and very trustworthy.

A few years back I bought an X41 Tablet from him that started to show some weird digitiser issues after a few days (cursor wobbling and going a bit crazy) - sent it back, he promptly looked it over and gave a refund no questions asked.

Right now I'm trying to evaluate between x60s and x61s (had to rule out x200/201 because of the price differences). I might just end up getting the x60s for $250 since I'm inclined towards longer battery life.

I have an X61 with 2gb RAM and it runs Vista and office 2007 fine. No problems at all. The X61 has a bit faster processor than the X60, its 2.0 dual core. I too thought about an X60, but decided to pay a little more for a faster and newer model.

If you're going to get a X6x-series machine (which I highly recommend, as they're great little ultraportables), get an X61 or X61s. They're much faster than their X60-series counterparts and are capable of addressing >= 4GB of memory.

I read here and there, quite often in fact, that the c2d cpu and chipset have a bigger TDP, what's your take on this ? I've been annoyed by the fact that the x60s cpu cannot be throttled below 1Ghz ( Pentium M could go quite low ) I wonder if c2d are limited to 1Ghz too

Yes, the minimum multiplier for these CPU is 6. The bus speed is what determines the actual minimum speed.

400FSB(Banias/Dothan) - 6x100=600MHz
533FSB(Dothan/some low-end Core CPUs) - 6x133=800MHz
666FSB(Yonah/Merom) - 6x166 = 1000MHz
800FSB(Merom) - 6x200 = 1200MHz

I was in the same boat and went for an x61t, a bit more at $370 on eBay with 5 months of Lenovo warranty left, but since I've had my x31 for 6+ years! I was interested in the low voltage Core2 Duo and the apparently excellent screen. Should be fun to have the table format handy on occasion too.
