X60 - convert dead 8 cell into good 4 cell battery

#1 Post by g8tzl » Thu Feb 03, 2011 5:31 pm

The battery on my X60 is dead - yellow flashing charge light.

The battery is an 8 cell type. I guess one or more of the lithium cells has completely failed.

I was thinking about replacing the dead cells OR just converting the 8 cell battery into a 4 cell battery (in an 8 cell case) - assuming there are 4 good cells out of the 8 cells. I've replaced dead batteries on other stuff.

All I really need is a battery which lasts, say 15 minutes. I mainly use the power supply and just require battery power for moving locations without having to power down. It will also stop the yellow light flashing :)

I'm typing this on a 12 year old 600E and the battery still lasts about 10 minutes :) Looks like the modern cells are not as well made as the older ones!!!

Does anybody know whether this is possible? Will the integrated 8 cell "battery management" circuit allow just 4 cells to be charged. Is there a battery "cycle timer" which needs to be reset?

Thanks

I think this is not a good idea. I am all in for DIY and hacking, but when the subject comes to Li-Ion batteries, the risks are too high. Any alteration may cause overheating and subsequent fire. Why not check out Lenovo site for bargain battery deals? There were many forum members who received brand-new batteries which were sold for little money.

I would tend to agree with koray on this one. I rebuilt a battery pack for a Daewoo notebook about 8 years ago. It was a NiMH battery so I used standard AA cells. It did work quite well, but, the cells just couldn't take the heat. The casings on them shriveled up quite badly.

I have rebuilt one Li-Ion pack and it just never worked right. It would last for a few hours (I used good, however old cells) it just never read accurately. I just could never use it because I never trusted it. I eventually disposed of it and ordered a used battery on Ebay for cheap just to fill the hole in (turns out it actually worked quite well).

I lucked out on Ebay one time though, I found a brand new Lenovo branded 4 cell battery for my X40. Still working perfectly now, only has 14 cycles on it though lol

Look around on Ebay, you can get some good deals sometimes. I have had good luck with aftermarket batteries. I bought an 8 cell aftermarket for my X40 and it works great, and a 9 cell for my T60 which works great too :)

Good luck!

Since I'm out of the market on new(ish) 8-cell X60 batteries....

http://cgi.ebay.com/110637374713 (Factory sealed box; $44)
http://cgi.ebay.com/260731746613 (Open box, 0 charge cycles; $20)
http://cgi.ebay.com/280611749022 (Open box, 0 charge cycles; $14)

All are factory packs and clear from the battery recall program from a few years ago.
