I thought the keyboard is equipped with liquid drainage channels? How is it then that the Thinkpad can get fried?

I don't think the liquid drainage channels were designed to cope with an entire cup of a hot sugary liquid. If you spilled a few drops of water..maybe. Also, how long after the spill did you wait to move the laptop?

And did you pull the power from it immediately and leave it turned off until it was completely cleaned out and dry?

If you opened up your laptop and took at look at the keyboard, you would see that there is a tray on the underside of it that has openings leading to drainage holes on the underside of the laptop body.

If a small amount is spilled, the liquid get routed into the openings and down through the bottom of the body.

If you spilled a lot, the tray would overflow and liquid would enter the system board area.

When you spill liquid on any electronic device take the battery out ASAP and keep it from getting power until its totally dry and it won't get damaged.

If you look you can see most X60 series laptops do have a tiny gap between the palmrest and the keyboard where liquid can flow. Basically the keyboard is a tray that can catch and guide your liquid but if its a whole glass spills it will go beyond the capacity of the keyboard to drain.

But it WILL keep the liquid from going right onto your motherboard, giving you enough time to pull the battery and cut the power and save your unit.

Problem is you'd have to be like a ninja to remove the battery without tipping water onto the motherboard.

I once spilled a small cup of water on my X60s... Lifted the laptop up, caught the water coming out the bottom in the cup, drank it and continued about my business. 8)

Think of the drainage system like a bulletproof vest. They don't make you invincible, and you should still try to avoid the situations in which it could be used -- but if you are in that situation, it can at least improve your odds.
