X60 USB ports not functioning - XP missing all USB drivers??

I have just tried plugging in various USB devices (memory stick, USB hard drive, USB floppy drive) and found that NONE of the USB ports were working - no "New Hardware Found" messages etc , no bleeps.
I decided to update the BIOS...which went OK..but still the same problem - USB ports dead.
I checked the Device Manager and found that the USB devices were recognised but there were no drivers...I ran the install driver option and then the USB ports began to work for that particular device!!!!!
Basically, it appears that XP has lost its entire library of USB drivers. Whenever I plug in a USB device, it is not recognised and I have to check Device Manager and install a driver for the particular device.
It looks like this problem has probably existed since a fresh install (not done by me) when I acquired the X60.
Any suggestions for next steps. I am tempted to do a full reinstall...or is it possible to run a "repair" program which automatically identifies all the missing drivers?
