X60 - hidden Rescue and Restore partition- factory state

I recently acquired an X60 which seems to be missing its USB driver library - you need to install the driver for every USB device plugged in.

I'm looking at simply doing a full original factory state restore using the hidden partition - accessed via pressing the ThinkVantage button at boot up.

I'm looking for any views on using the hidden partition. One thing I noticed was that Norton Antivirus is part of the original factory state. Will Norton still be operational and will I be able to run an update for free? When I got the X60 I deleted Norton and installed the free Windows Antivirus program. I just used the XP uninstall option..although I think you really need to run a Norton utility to remove every element of Norton.

I've read a lot about others using Recovery disks BUT not that many seem to use the hidden partition restore option??

You know what I'd do? go to the Lenovo page below:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... PDATE.html

and download the appropriate system update utility for Win XP (read what it says about net framework on that page also). Install it, and let it run. It'll tell you what all is missing for thinkpad-specific drivers and software. Sounds like your issue is with Lenovo, not Windows.

I originally did run the Thinkpad ThinkVantage Update utility as well as Windows Update.

The ThinkVantage utility did identify lots of updates although I excluded a BIOS update due to a dead battery.

I've now done the BIOS update after I discovered the USB missing driver problem...I've only recently tried a USB device with the X60

I'm now thinking that maybe the original reinstall by the previous owner failed..the original owner had also been trying to enable Bluetooth...there is a Bluetooth icon on the toolbar even though my X60 does not have Bluetooth installed.
