Lenovo replaced ultralight screen with standard screen...

#1 Post by zodiac » Thu May 05, 2011 9:03 am

A while ago I posted my story about a broken display and Lenovos inability to properly warranty that on this forum. I just got my follow up story I need your advice on:

About a month ago the X60s finally arrived back at my place with an acceptable display. The only thing that kept annoying me was, that the screen always seemed too dim.

A couple of days ago I accidently came by my "parts look up list" on the Lenovo website and realised for the first time, that my original display actually was an ultralight type without me ever knowing it.

Now I am wondering, what my options are:

Lenovo obviously replaced my broken ultralight screen with the standard version. Is this acceptable within the warranty obligations?

Also my machine finally went out of warranty about a month ago, so I am not sure if I could actually get back on that case. I am also not sure if they actually had an replacement ultralight screen since it took the repair shop already 2 months on backorder to just get the standard screen.

What do you guys reckon? What would you do?

I was actually planning to use the machine for another couple of years as everything else is really fine about it. But the dim display really keeps annoying me. I always wish I could turn the brightness up one or two more steps. So its not just about harping on about my rights.

All the best,
Martin

Sorry to hear of your trouble.

I am not sure if where you are differs from the US.

In the US repairs are covered for 90 days. In my experience if you were unhappy with the repair here in the US a simple polite call explaining your concern to EZserv would remedy the situation.

Its now 4 models back from the current X series models and even with the best will in the world, sooner or later part supplies for specific configurations that far back are going to run out.

Its certainly worthwhile talking to Lenovo to see if they can do anything for you, but pragmatically, they simply may not have the specific part available any longer.

Cheers,

My understanding is that the UL models have a thinner display assembly, which is too thin to house a standard LCD panel. So, it's quite likely the entire assembly has been replaced. I would be very upset if I were you.

Given that you're out of warranty, I'd open up the lid and look up the FRU number of the panel before doing anything else...

Good luck and keep us posted.

Doesn't matter if it's out of warranty. Their records will indicate that they gave you the wrong part number, and it's certainly within your right to have it rectified.

Hey thanks alot. I will call them up then and try my best. I just dont really want to go back into all this hassle again.

Bottom line of this whole story is, that I probably will never buy a new Lenovo again as I consider warranty coverage pretty useless after all these unpleasant experiences. One is seemingly alot better off surfing the wave of those piles of machines getting sold of by companies after 3 years of usage - buying those for a fraction of their original price and just getting the next one once they break down.

Have a great sunday! Over here in Germany we have splendid springtime weather.

That's also my philosophy. And remember that if a laptop breaks down, you can still sell it for parts and recover some of the money you spent on it.

Hi there, sorry to hear about your problem. Just a suggestion here, have you tried using the BIOS to turn the LCD maximum brightness up. I believe most Thinkpads have this option and assuming its still set to Normal, you could turn it to Brightest, and this might be a temporary solution to your dim screen.
