X61s overheating

#1 Post by sashikawa » Fri May 13, 2011 8:27 am

Guys,
I have 2 laptops - X61 and X61s. X61s has a new motherboard. And I see that the idle temperature X61s (58-60c) is higher than X61 (50-52c). Anybody has ideas why?

Alex, if you run tpfancontrol, do the fans run at the same rpm at idle load (check task manager for CPU load)? If yes, I'd say that the X61s's heatsink is not working correctly, usually due to incorrect seating. Just make sure it's not some program or process that's using CPU cycles. If anything I'd assume that the X61s CPU would run cooler since they're low voltage.

Harry,
both X61 and X61s have the same software. But in idle regimen X61 T is 50-52c, X61s is 58-60, fut is stop. Fun is running at 60c.
What you can recommend - change the heatsink paste? Move X61s to servise?
May be you know what is the normal T of X61 and X61s in idle regimen?

Alex, I don't have an X61s here to test for you, but I did power up my X61 (2Ghz). At complete idle the CPU temp (per tpfancontrol in BIOS mode) is 44*C with no fan running after about 10 minutes of power. That is in a cool room. I'd guess it's 18 to 19*C in here. The only thing out of the ordinary that might effect heat is that I am running an SSD and not a conventional hard drive...no WWAN card. This machine has that small second fan too, which is not running at this moment as far as I can tell. Once I leave it on for awhile, I'd say 30 minutes or so, the fan seems to run continuously at 3300rpm and the CPU temp is 35*C. I hope this helps.
