what is needed to fix this X60?

#1 Post by zsero » Mon Jun 06, 2011 12:46 pm

Can you help me what are the required components to fix this X60?

I would think I just need to buy a replacement baseplate and transplant all the internals onto that one. Do I need to buy anything else?

Can I use an X61 baseplate for this X60?

Are the wires for wireless or 3G?

Lokking around at bases for sell... it appears as they are sold like:

THINKPAD X60T X61T BASE BOTTOM COVER 42W3796
IBM X60S X61S base case bottom cover 41V9728 42W2658
IBM Thinkpad X60t X61t Bottom Base Cover 42W2547

the thing appears to only differentiate by the submodel,,, does the base have an FRU part number on it?
(2)701C,(1)760EL,(6)760XL,(1)760XD
(4)CD Drives (5)int floppies (3)ext floppy (4)2.1GB
(10)CF/IDE w/2 or 4GB 133x CF (1)760XL restore CD
(1)Belkin USB 2.0 32bit Cardbus (2)WPC54G(S) Wifi Cardbus
(1)Belkin F5D5020 NIC (1)Giga-Byte GN-WLM01 Wifi
(1)Backpack CD (1) Xircom REM56G-10 + misc

X60 or X61 will work. Tablets or "s" models (x60s, x61s) will not work. It is hard to know what else is damaged. I would inspect the hinge. The wires are wireless antenna and my guess it that the red one is from a wireless WWAN. I would need to see a picture of a larger area to be sure. I would also check to see if pulling those wires damaged anything in the screen or the body. You should note that the WWAN card generates a little extra heat, which might be a problem. X61 machines added a second fan to take care of that, but the 2nd fan has a tendency to wear out a lot more often than the main fan.

wow, to tear apart thinkpad case like that... The hinge must be at fault, I would replace it aswell or you risk breaking another bottom case too. The hinges sometimes tend to get too tight and then something like this happens.

Just my two cents.

Speaking from experience with replacing bases on X60's and X61's, if your current X60 base has an infrared port, there is no infrared window on an X61 base. I agree with what's been said above. You need to make sure none of the WWAN wiring is pulled or damaged, and you need to determine why this damage happened in the first place. A stuck or stiff hinge is a good place to start.

Very surprising getting notifications from this topic after so long ago. Just for the reference, I could fix the above problem perfectly just by replacing the base with one from an X61. Neither the hinges nor the antennae needed any fix.
