Packed my X61 in my luggage and came back shattered. Need counsel on best way to replace and do it myself. I've previously replaced one of these before (different machine); however, I'd bought the whole assembly, including the back cover and hinges on ebay. Can someone recommend a good LCD, and how hard to just replace the LCD itself?

It's not hard at all. Normally you just unscrew the bezel and an get on with it, the screws are hidden behind the rubber buttons of course. Unless you need to exchange the inverter too, which is the thin long circuit board beneath the LCD. In that case you need to pluck off the removable panel above the keyboard that houses the power and other buttons so you can unplug the inverter's cable from the motherboard, I realize some laptops don't have this removable panel though. Every laptop is different as they don't really follow standards. This youtube video shows the instruction for the T60, which should be similar to the X61: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTkp7zC0wGg

The real hard part is replacing the broken lcd lamp, which is a very long and thin bulb within the LCD housing, its extremely easy to break and you have to solder it and line it up to the glass so it can refract light over the entire screen. This is hard for me, though people with electronic background can be good at it, for me I just replace the whole screen. I haven't opened an LED LCD though.

Once you're done it a few times, you might gain the confidence to replace LCD for cellphone as well, but its easier to break things the smaller and more proprietary it gets.
