First X6x......battery question

#1 Post by mbarker » Wed Jul 20, 2011 10:23 pm

I got my first X-series today, an X60, 1702-4EU. It is so small, it is like a mini-me to my T-series!

Anyway, what is is the deal with the battery on these? Mine is an OEM FRU 93P5030. I gather that this is an 8 cell extended battery, and apparently will power the machine for about 6hrs (nice!). But it seems to be the wrong size- it does not take up the entire battery cutout. This is an issue mostly because with the battery installed the machine does not sit flat on the desk- its tilty! What's up with that?? I need to shim in it in order to type! So is this normal or am I missing something?

thanks
-mike

As I thought, it seems you have an x60s not x60 (I think you mistyped- I assume this is the correct type/model) in your signature:

Product: ThinkPad X60s 1702-4EU [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: L2400(1.66GHz), 512MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, IEEE 1394, Fingerprint reader, 8c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

The x60 and x60s both use the same battery but the x60s requires the little battery spacer FRU 92P1227 which will fill that gap and make it fit nice and snug and flat on your desk. The battery spacer screws into those 2 little holes you see near one end of the battery. Place a WTB (want to buy) in the marketplace. Someone on the Forum here probably has a spare one of those- they may even send it to you for free. Sorry I don't have one to spare right now.

Enjoy your x60s,
Daniel.

Uhhhhhh.....yeah, it seems that you are correct. I had not noticed that it is an X60s.....and apparently the seller did not either. The machine is definitely a 1702-4EU....I checked in "System Information." The thing is, it only says "X60" below the display, and not "X60s." Is that normal?

Thanks for the clarification on the battery. This would be a nice little machine if it were not trying to burn my right hand off.....

1702-4EU is definitely an x60s, not x60 according to the Lenovo website: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ry=17024EU

My guess is that someone put an x60 screen on an x60s base. The base gives the machine its identity, not the screen. It's not a big deal, I believe the screens are completely interchangeable between the models.

Well if you're referring to heat on the palmrest that's a different issue. Unfortunately, an all too common issue with the x60 and x60s. Do an advanced Google search of the Forum using this link: http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q ... as_qdr=all

You'll find plenty of information about that and some ways to mitigate and remove some of the excess heat having to do with fan settings, switching wifi cards, etc.

I have a battery spacer FRU42W3050 if you want. All i'd ask is you pay the postage, UK to USA. (paypal if you have it). I'll send it the cheapest option.

As for the hot palmrest, do a search, there are things you can do to make it far more acceptable. Also over time, you get used to it. I couldn't live without my X61. Its a laptop, in the true sense of the word, rather than a portable desktop.
X61 and (retired)600x.
