X61s 15 Anniversary Edition

#1 Post by bugmn » Tue Aug 30, 2011 10:22 pm

Does anyone have any information about this? From quick Google I can't find anything official, not even from any real tech sites. Just what looks like a bunch of automated blogs.

Any info at all, just an interesting piece?

I wouldn't mind getting my mitts on one of those special texture X61 Palm Rests. I wonder what the FRU # is and if it is available from Lenovo or elsewhere ...

I have a Thinkpad Reserve Edition, with french keyboard as i bought it second-hand in France (and i'm french BTW :)

It's a really nice piece of hardware and the leather cover is of great handmade quality. The brown-orange color is OK, but i would have preferred black :) Anyway this brown type gives it a kind of "old school" style and i like it this way. I hardly use it because it feels (and is) too heavy for my daily use. Indeed the leather cover is specifically made for the 8 cell battery (i think it's 8 but it's the largest X61s battery anyway), and it doesn't looks "right" with a 4 cell battery. And it doesn't feel "right" too because it's too "empty" at the back with a 4 cell.

Anyway it's part of my Thinkpads collection, i was lucky to find one on eBay, and for a good price.

When i bought it it was still under warranty, which expired 6-12 months ago. The hotline is a specific 3rd level support with dedicated engineers (or supposedly).

But the best part is the packaging : i was very lucky when i bought it, as the seller sent me all the original packaging and it's like new. The box is full white and when you open it it smells leather, there is a black square foam protection with a small red spare trackpoint in the middle. It's simple and luxury. Lot of accessories and documentation, you feel like a special person when you read the dedicated documentation. Even the black card with the phone numbers for tech support is great, it is made of plastic and "credit card sized" to carry in your wallet.

I'm not at home yet, but i will be happy to send you pictures and part numbers. Last time i checked you could order them but the price of the leather parts was crazy ! The palmrest should be on a reasonable price range but i'm not sure.

Feel free to ask me questions regarding the Reserve Edition, i will be happy to answer.

P.S: i just realized i should take picture of all the packaging and the accessories, as it's hard to find informations about the Reserve Edition.

Harryc, I just checked your link and i think mine is not this 15th anniversary edition. The sticker is printed "Reserve" if i remember well. I will have a look tonight, but anyway i'm not going to delete my previous post, it took too long to wrote :)

No worries. I wouldn't be surprised if the palm rest was the same for the Reserve edition as the 15th anniversary addition. Does the palm rest on your reserve feel rubbery like the top of the LCD lid or like smooth plastic? Pictures would be great!

Thanks for the write up Boris (my name too!). Very interesting info

Pictures would be really cool!

15th Anniversary Edition was only released in Japan and does not have the orange leather cover. I guess Reserve is for the rest of the world.

Jeebus, that leather's expensive!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like a regular X61s wrapped in the orange leather, and nothing else is different

It has special 15th anniversary stickers on palmrest and lid.

Otherwise it is identical AFAIK.

The sticker on the Reserve Edition is showing, well, "Reserve Edition" :)
It's basically a X61s (except it's not written X61s anywhere), but the palmrest and the screen bezel have a soft rubbery touch, a little like the palmrest on the X301.
Concerning the leather it's not just a folded piece of leather, but there are aditionnal plastic and metallic parts to access the underside of the laptop and allow ventilation, and the latch mechanism is of a coppery color to match the leather color.

Well, i definitely have to send pictures this week with the part numbers :)

Someone should come up with a upgrade kit. It's only the casing afterall.

Sounds like a good idea.

I got a 8-cell Reserve Edition battery for my X61s. Looks a bit better than the standard 8-cell chunk.

What's the difference between the reserve edition battery and the normal? I cant imagine the didnt anything other than wrap a normal 8 cell in leather? Or is that what you mean by looks better?

And yeah RBS - I followed the auction to that conclusion..wish I didn't miss out.

No, it is not wrapped in leather:) It is just thinner than normal X6* battery. Nothing special, but I like it. Here you can gather more information http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product ... MIGR-68216

I re read my post and found it was confusing. I assumed the Reserve edition just had a normal 8 cell covered by the reserve edition leather case that covers the whole lap top. Seems pointless to have a special battery for it.

Thanks for the link. That is so weird. Is the non extended part of the battery totally flush or does it have partial cylinders on the bottom like the 4 cell enhanced and normal 8 cell?

If not.. it looks like its more or less a 4 cell slim "li polymer" merged with the standard cells

Very cool

It is as thin as 4-cell slim battery for X61s. Yes, it is cool and I like it a bit better than the standard 8-cell X6* battery which I also use sometimes.
