A/C adapters for X61 and T60p

#1 Post by Specter » Wed Aug 31, 2011 4:07 pm

Hello all,

I have an X61 and a T60p, and they came with A/C adapters that are 60W/20V and 90W/20V respectively. Can I use these interchangably with the two computers?

Thanks,
Specter

You can use the 90W on both, but the 65W should be used only on the X61.
For short emergencies you can use the 65W also on the T60p, but the adapter will get hot, and the T60p will not work at full power.

Ok, many thanks for that information! I should try and get me another 90W adapter then.

Absolutely! If you have any doubts, then look at the wattage reported by the Power Manager -- you will see that neither machine comes even close to 40W, let alone 65W, no matter what the workload or combination of "extra" attached devices.

Furthermore, since the battery "buffers" power, if there is even a partially charged battery installed, then you could probably use a 30W adapter and would not know the difference. [I am not recommending this; I am simply explaining why it would work.]

It may be true that the system is only drawing 35-40W but with the newer 20V power supplies, there's actually a signal pin in the DC plug that informs the laptop what type of supply is connected.
