Hi guys,

Is the second fan installable for all X61? I've upgraded the WLAN to intel Ultimate-N 6300 and installed the MC8790 WWAN on the second slot. The palm rest now feel uncomfortably warm, esp when the WLAN 6300 card is connect at 5Ghz with full MIMO switched on.

As far as I know the 2nd fan connector was standard equipment on X61/s machines originally ordered with the factory WWAN feature, and I do not recall ever having seen anyone solder a new one in place if it was missing either.

thank you for the info, does anyone has a picture of the connector for the second fan? I want to be sure I have that connector on my mainboard.

Dammit, just opened up my X61. this second fan 2nd connector doesn't come standard for X61. I suppose anyone skilled enough can solder this connector back on.

That's assuming that is all that is required for the second fan circuit, and as I stated nobody has reported success doing it.

sigh...well, I guess I have to live with it until thinkpad ultrabook is made available, and hopefully by then the thunderbolt port will be made available to PC. Thanks for the info mate!

is it necessary to install this 2nd hand fan ? or is it better to replace the wireless card on this laptop ?
i have x61s btw.running quite hot on the palm rest was thinking either opt for intel 6200 or this fan.

any advise ?

It's easier and cheaper just to get the 6200N.
The 2nd fan may not even fit in yours!
Don't forget this 6200N is a half-size card compared to what you have now and needs an adapter-bracket to 'fill the gap'.

Are you running Windows 7? I've always had overheating palm rest problems when I used Windows XP and Ubuntu.... likewise all my fellow X60 friends. But since moving to Windows 7, it never gets hot anymore. One of the settings in the Thinkpad Power Manager for Windows 7, (actually in Windows 7 Power options in genera) is the ability to run the wireless cards in various power modes. I run mine in maximum power savings mode, which keeps it really cool. I don't notice any loss in signal or stability.

you'll find this settings through device manager:

See roaming aggressiveness & transmit power, or you can set this using profiles created through access connections
