X61T, Windows 7 x64: Drivers and APS problems

#1 Post by visionviper » Mon Sep 05, 2011 8:43 pm

I have been in the process of setting up a X61T with Windows 7 SP1 64-bit. I am having problems installing certain drivers and software. Trying to install the latest wireless drivers breaks my wifi. I have tried installing the Active Protection Software but it never starts up. I have tried installing the Rapid Storage Technology software and it won't let me install it. Anyone had any similar problems?

FWIW, I have an X61 and for the items you mentioned there is no difference between it and an X61T. I used Lenovo Thinkvantage System Update and had no issues with the APS or Wireless drivers. I have no idea on the RST, don't recall installing it or using it.

I've seen the hard drive and what I can gather it was the original one that came with the laptop too. This is the second time I have had problems getting APS installed on a system. It's a shame I can't just call Lenovo up and get some help. RST is the new name for the Intel Matrix software stuff.

Connect using a LAN cable, run Windows Update, and then install Lenovo's System Update (SU) and select what you need.

That's about what I did last year, when I fresh installed Win7 x64. And APS is running.

You may also like to check Lenovo's support site for updated drivers, there're discrepancies between SU and the website occasionally. You have to decide which one to follow though.

I didn't install Intel's storage driver. Didn't have good experience with it and don't know what benefits it bring, if any. I have to admit that I usually stick with Windows' built-in drivers because they usually have the best compatibility. 3rd party drivers sometimes bring performance increase and more functionality at the cost of compatibility.

Cheers.

I had some issues with the WiFi.. Thinkvantage Access Connections wasnt always friendly in enabling disabling the (Power On & Off) for the Wireless Card.

Dont seem to have an issue with APS.

None the less, I've been wondering the same.. which are the System Update for X61T chosen SETUPs that we MUST install and people have had good experiences with v/s which ones we should not.

IMO and in no particular order...

ThinkPad APS (for spinning HDD users)
TrackPoint Driver
Tablet Shortcut Menu
Tablet Button Driver
Power Manager and Power Management Driver
System Interface Driver

Cheers.

Edit: BTW, I'm not sure if it's TSM or TBM, but one of them includes a utility called "Autoscroll", which I manually removes as I found it causes problem with some programs.

Has any of you installed Windows 7 directly via the SP1 Retail?

I think there are some issues here? Thoughts!?
