Funny problem on a Thinkpad X61, BSOD when on battery!

#1 Post by SmallWalrus » Fri Oct 07, 2011 7:46 am

I'm not sure if you guys have ever experienced this before. I just got hold of a X61 that works perfectly fine when on AC, but the moment I switch it to battery, it would immediately crash with a BSOD with a "uncorrectable hardware error" message. I will keep trying to see if this can be reproduced on other operating systems, but have you guys ever encountered this?

What do you think is wrong?

Is it the original battery that came with the computer? Maybe you have an x61t battery that could be incompatible..

It was an original battery. I have tried searching around on this issue and it seems rather rare. One instance was with a T61, another report of it was on a X220, but the symptoms are all similar:
  1. The laptop works ok when on AC
When AC is removed/when laptop is started on battery, it will BSOD
I doubt it is a software issue either since starting the laptop up on a Ubuntu LiveCD, then removing the AC power, causes the same thing too.

I have since crushed the battery connectors and desoldered the thing off the system board. The computer is still good to use as a desktop replacement, but it can't be used on the go.

Seriously intriguing and puzzling defect.

well, with an absence of other ideas so far, it seems likely to be a motherboard fault, a bios fault or a bad battery. The bios is easy enough to re-install, another battery would be easy enough to acquire ( even if it was a nearly dead one, you would see if it was the cause of the blue screen) then of course we would be down to the motherboard ( maybe)

I don't have any real clue though. :?

are you sure it's a hardware problem and not a software one? Have you reinstalled the OS (without any X61 specfica drivers) and seen if it reproduces the BSOD?

Try running a linux live distribution (e.g. ubuntu) and see oif it faults.

If it does not then it would point to a faulty wiindows installation.
