HTS541010G9AT00 -> SOLVED! Upgrade it with official firmware

#1 Post by lukee » Thu Jul 08, 2010 3:37 am

Hello, I got two pcs of HTS541010G9AT00 100 GB ATA HDD free of charge - both in good condition but I broken one of them probably by wrong command for FW update :( . I would like to use it in T43p without annoying 2010 error, but this FW update CD told me (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62282), that FW upgrade for this HDD is not neccessary. Firmware version inside the last workable HDD is MBZOA60A. As I read many topics here and on ThinkWiki, I need to get firmware MBZIA60A into it. Could somebody help me, what correct command I need to use for this type of HDD to upgrade it with official IBM's firmware? For example, I don't exactly know what TBL file (I guess it's BIOS checksum) I need to use :( I've just last attempt. Thank you.

Translated from Chinese, but mentions your target firmware level. I hope it helps. If it does, please consider translating it to english here.

Thanks Harryc, but there is one incorrect thing. If I download fwhd56.iso, it not contains MB4IA60A.bdr file so I can't follow that japanesse instructions anymore :( Nearest similar file to MB4IA60A.bdr in FWHD56 pack is file MB4IA6CA.bdr - I am not sure if I can use it... Also described tbl file mpbA60Ab.tbl is missing in that ISO and MPBA6CAB.tbl is present instead. So I am very confused with mix of FWHD56.iso pack and that instruction. Do you (or somebody else here) have somewhere stored older version of FW upgrade program, than is fwhd56.iso?

Here's a list of firmware versions. Just add .iso to the end of the filename and do a google search.

Hello, so the FW upgrade finished successfully, no 2010 error now :) I applied method #1 from japanesse web, it worked:
Method 1:
copy MB4IA60A.bdr MBZOA60A.bdr
copy MB4IA60A.bdr MBZIA60A.bdr
hfui14 OA60A-pm MBZIA60A.bdr / f mpbA60Ab.tbl
hfui14 IA60A-pm MBZIA60A.bdr / f mpbA60Ab.tbl
HDD itself (HTS541010G9AT00) is reported for my system as HTS541080G9AT00, but shows full 100 GB capacity and error 2010 gone. Thanks Harryc for your effort!

Here are my exact steps for FW upgrade of HTS541010G9AT00:
1) obtain FreeDOS boot CD ISO image and burn it to CD (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stu ... basews.iso)
2) prepare second CD, with two folders named method1 and method2, i.e. D:\method1 and D:\method2 (or integrate them into FreeDOS's ISO if you have enough knowhow)
3) method1 folder contains already renamed files as japanesse web describes, same apply for method2 folder and this burn CD
4) boot FreeDOS CD, choose something like "Do not install, just boot FreeDOS from CD"
5) eject FreeDOS CD and insert another one with method* folders and files described at the start of this post
6) navigate to method1 folder on second CD and simply run code described on japanesse web:

Code: Select all

hfui14 OA60A -pm MBZIA60A.bdr /f mpbA60Ab.tbl
This process will fail, error described unknown HDD type. Now execute this command (we are still in the method1 folder!)

Code: Select all

hfui14 IA60A -pm MBZIA60A.bdr /f mpbA60Ab.tbl
Firmware update utility will now show 'PASS' info, after ThinkPad restarts the 2010 error disappears.
7) Apply commands from method2 folder, if method #1 fails. After update, your HTS541010G9AT00 drive will be renamed to HTS541080G9AT00, but system will report total space of drive in amount of 100 GB (93.1 GB formatted capacity) and firmware version after update should be:

Code: Select all

MB4IA60A
as is in my case.
8) You can run Lenovo's official ISO with HDD firmware update utilities and try if it will offer FW upgrade now (I guess that yes)
