X31 replace hdd and boot problem

My Old Thinkpad x31 HDD has died Have bought a new a fujitsu 80GB but cannot get external cd rom to boot up win xp cd to do reinstall. Not that much of a computer buff so answers as layman as you can please

Did you boot to BIOS and set it to be able to boot from OTHER or EXTERNAL or USB? I forget the exact wording it uses.

Alternately just hold down F12 at the boot screen and select the external drive.

Hi There Cheers for info have getting sorted something wrong with old usb cd rom replaced it all sorted now many thanks
