OS-X Yosemite on T41... w/SSD ?

#1 Post by coors » Sat Nov 01, 2014 1:58 pm

Is putting OS-X Yosemite on this T41 even a possibility? Also, I've read that Apple has even made is difficult for Mac computer owners to get TRIM support, when installing an SSD. So, even if I could install OS-X to an SSD on the T41 would I be able to enable TRIM?

I tried Hackintosh on USB-drive, but BIOS doesn't recognize USB-sticks. Any suggestions?

Even if you some how got Yosemite to work on a T41, I imagine the performance (even with a SSD) would be quite poor. Windows 7 has lower system requirements and it ran OK on my T43. The single core processor really holds the T4x (and older) back from newer operating systems.

From what I recall USB sticks have to be formatted a certain way in order to be recognized as bootable devices on machines from this era.

Having said that, even if you manage to boot the OS in question, you'll be installing a major headache given the hardware incompatibilities...

W7 is somewhat of a stretch on these machines, but there are many *nix ditros that will run just fine...

Thank you for your replies, @brchan and @ajkula66 ! Yes, I read that even the 2006 Macbook Pro was dropped from support with Yosemite, so I really didn't see how a 2003 IBM product was going to work. It would be great if it could though but as you said, the single core cpu is probably not adequate. Also, as you said, driver support and swapping components to OS-X compatible stuff would be problematic, if not impossible. The T41 was my only hope for installing OS-X though, as both my other notebook and netbook utilize AMD processors.

If you are interested, there are linux distros such as Pear OS and Elementary OS that emulate the OSX interface and feel, and should also run faster than OSX.

@brchan Thanks for bringing these OSs to my attention. I'm not really looking for another Linux distro, Xubuntu does all that I need, but I'll check these out.

OS X Mountain Lion and later require a 64 bit Intel CPU and a compatible 64-bit GPU. It is impossible to get even Lion on a T41. However, if you meant a T410 then it is a different story.

@Altemose Thank you for that info! That's what I needed to know!

@brchan Couldn't figure out how to install Elementary-OS to the T41 with it's non-PAE CPU . I tried Elementary-OS on 2x machines, both AMD based. One had an issue, when I turned it on one day the keyboard didn't function. On a netbook it worked great, but I needed to install a video editor, Flowblade, and the 32-bit Elementary-OS was based on Ubuntu 12.04 and I needed an Ubuntu 14.04 based OS. Elementary-OS 64-bit is Ubuntu 14.04 based, but I believe that I need to upgrade the RAM to 4GB first, which is do-able, to get a 64-bit OS to function well. Anyways, I may try it again if I upgrade the RAM in the netbook.

The IBM ThinkPad T41 series only supported 2 GB of RAM. I am not sure really if you are talking about a T41 or a T410 as they are very different products. If you have the latter, then it does support 4 GB of RAM.
