Best Mac Antivirus?
Best Mac Antivirus?
Hi, Thinkpads,
I have two mac devices I would like to protect. We have Mac OS High Sierra on both. Reasonably healthy password habits.
I have read online about several programs:
Norton for Mac, TrendMicro, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky. All appear fairly similar in capability and reviews. Also, have read about something new called "Clam XAV".
Does anyone have a particular favorite or suggestion among the ones I listed?
Thanks

Re: Best Mac Antivirus?
I'm wondering if people are running much AV on Mac OS at all.. I'm not running any on Linux for example. There are people who'd say an anti-virus adds some new vulnerabilities while mitigating others. Most of the viruses are probably targeting Windows anyway.
I wouldn't mind running my internet through a decent firewall even on Linux but I'd want it to run on some hardware locally in my apartment not on somebody else's server and would want it not to disclose to anybody what sites I'm visiting. I wouldn't mind paying for it somewhat but I haven't found a solution.
Clam - whatever it is - sounds like the open source one right? So that thing can probably scan files on your disk and that is all it can do is it not? I suppose there isn't much harm in doing that periodically though I'm not convinced if there's a lot of benefit either.

I don't run custom AV on Windows either. I find the built-in anti-malware utility sufficient.
Basic firewall capabilities are also provided, once by the router, and twice by the OS.

Re: Best Mac Antivirus?
Actually I've got ESET on all Win 7 machines that I still run. At least it hasn't caused me any problems over a good number of years
ESET version for Linux is effectively non-existent - something very old and not working. No idea about Mac.
I've been meaning to try Qubes OS as a means of non-AV protection against "the evils" but haven't gotten around to it yet.
