Install problem

I installed OS 10.4.1 with no problem on a 20gig 4200 rpm drive in my t42, it runs smooth no problems, except the wireless of course but that is not a problem.
Anyhow, i wanted to create a dual boot with XP on my t30 on a 60g 7200 rpm drive, created to partitions and am using a retail version of XP pro rather than the long drawn out install with the ibm cds. For some reason when i start the installer it will not find the volume to install on. After several tries I decided to repartition the whole drive again without XP and see if it would install, still same problem, I can go to the disk utility and identify the disk but it will not show up in the "select volume to install osx on" .
