x31, Pentium M 1.5ghz, 512mb ram, ATI Mobility

Yesterday I installed:
10.4.6.
I had to do it several times, one reason is because I did NOT select customize and just hit install the first time, therefore I did not have the intel patches applied.

The third time i installed I had selected the 'wireless' patches which I found out from a post here that you shouldn't select that. I followed that advise and it worked after the .ktext file mod that was mentioned here also. By the way i selected intel for sse2 but I saw a wiki that said I didn't even need this patch.

I then installed the "powermanagement" tweak listed on this site, and was able to get the battery indicator in the upper right, but it would not sleep. It didn't seem like the indicator would update correctly. I had also installed the RadeonTools pkg prior but after install it said I did not have a recognized radeon card, although I have the Radeon Mobility in this x31.

I then remembered that I had a 10.4.7 update to install, which after I did over-rode the powermanagement fix, but that that point i didn't care : } still no sleep mode worky.

For a summary (sorry if this is sloppy but trying to get back to reality after tweaking around with this yesterday):

-wireless working ( i have the atheros wifi card that came stock)
-ethernet working out of the box of course
-does not sleep with the things I tried mentioned above


I then proceeded to install firefox (what is up with that hard drive mount thing for running firefox?!), and then xcode tools, for gcc, and I was on my way. One observation is that the fonts didn't look as crisp as I expected, and better at a certain angle (??).


any suggestions on the sleep on a x31, appreciated. besides that it works good, I was happy about the wireless. one small note my hard drive started clicking around 2am. I tried a couple of sessions in the freezer, but it still clicks after booting up for a couple minutes. The result in the operating system is that I get the pinwheel and basically it is hosed, I think if it was M$ I would be getting the blue screen of love.

So I have put this aside, I was still getting used to the mac differences anyway (the window buttons in the left corner?!) and weird stuff like the menus being in the window manager on the active program. also I don't like the minimize window effect in the way it "smushes" into the toolbar. I don't know if you can deactivate this. Anywho, I had installed this on a spare drive and am back on my WinXP/Ubuntu 6.06 dual box hard drive. My Ubuntu gnome setup is tweaked to look like MacOSx and it works better, so no problems here : } I don't mind Linux under the hood rather than Mach microkernel.

Any comments about my experience, and compared to yours, welcome. It was fun trying it. Cheers. P

You can change the animation or deactivate this feature in System Preference > Dock > Minimize Using

wow a post! after taking the time to flush my experience to the board i was surprised to see no responses at all.

as a new (old) X31 owner I am happy to see your post, thanks!

Don't worry, your post was most welcome! I initially planned to install OSX on my new X60s, but since I saw your post, I might eventually do the same exercise on my old X31. In fact, I'd never OSX could be installed on the X31 (I was under the impression only newish hardware supported OSX).

i am in the process of switching out my clicking hard drive and will then try it again. I was told the newer available image and patch, .8, will make the suspend work. also i think i mentioned i installed the ati mobility package but my card was not recognized by it. therefore the graphics toolbar icons did not "get big" when you mouse over and I think the graphics were washed out somewhat . maybe there is a fix or a right way to do this, will look into it as i proceed.

i tried again. i installed 10.4.6, patched it to 10.4.7, and then to 104.8. suspend still does not work, and still crashing it. also the video is crap as there does appear to be driver support with my card for the qe/ci animation stuff. if anyone knows different post here. I am talking abou the ati mobility card that comes with the x31.
