This is the link to the X1600 discussion http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=19806

And yes the ATINDRV is the right file to modify

I already had tried that method and it caused the screen to show up black with weird lines during boot. did you guys get hardware mouse and resolution switching working? If so, enlighten me please!

random, are you 100% sure that <string>LCD</string> is valid? I still get tearing; it doesn't appear that the non-VESA framebuffer is loading... do you get tearing?

I am still curious as well what changing the card typr to C4 does. Just changing the graphics mode gets me the higher resolution.

I made the changes as stated in the bottom of page two, still get a black screen. I have played with this so much I will probably reload. Downloaded 10.4.6 JaS disc, so we will see if it makes any change.

EDIT: Same thing, still boots with black screen and some random color alonf the top.

When booting into safe mode it gave me 1600x1200, but do display changing options.

MalevolentEvil: To answer your question, yes I get tearing, but at least it works. So far this is the only way I've been able to get QE support that works, although i do get occasional tearing. Also, noone gets resolution switching. As far as i know, noone has been able to get resolution switching on any card other than an actual mac. <string>LCD</string> is what i used, so i guess it was the right one. For me it was mostly trial and error untill i got the QE/CI working and not get the black screen.

Wareynolds: 0x71c41002 is the device and vendor ID for the v5200. By changing this number in the kext, your machine will be able to pick up the card.

EDIT: I'm using the 1.4.26.11 (3493) ATIRadeonX1000 kext. Maybe its a different driver than you're using Wareynolds.

interesting... didn't even need to do any modification to ATINDRV to get QE/CI support....

Many people ave gotten resolution switching & hardware mouse.

No, I got black screen with colors at top for both just changing the info.plist file as well as doing all the changes to the ATINDR file.

I can get 1600x1200 resolution, but not with the card type set to the C4. If I set that I get the black screen with some colors along the top.

When I set back to C5, I look at the display under system profiler and it says no kext loaded. Why is it not loading that?

Looking at the version.plist I think I have the following:

Version 1.4.26
Buildversion 5
Sourceversion 42611

So that does not appear to match. How can I get the same kext? MaloventEvil, what version do you have?

Do I need to get back the 9700.kext file and hex edit that as mentioned in one of the threads at osx86project/insanelymac site?

I am also not sure what QE and CI actually will benifit, should I bother?

I basically did the same thing as randomocity, it booted up fine into 1600x1200, everything looks smooth, but I don't think I am getting QE/CI support - is there any way to tell?

Also, when I put in a DVD, the player starts then shuts down saying "application closed unexpectedly" I am able to play the DVD in VLC, but playback is choppy. Any ideas?

Ah, thanks - yea, neither QE/CI are supported with my current config - going to have to figure that out...

Gastro, I did not.

I was trying to figure out if there are other files I needed to edit. The link to the X1600/X1800 post refers to modifying the 9700kext file.

randomocity and/or Malovent, were there any other files or something that needed to be edited other than what you state in your post? Maybe there is something that is assumed I know that I do not.

From my reading, I gathered that this was actually a different method of enabling your card.

borisbadenov X1600 X1800
koverg X700 and other ATI PCIe Cards

Drivers

#46 Post by randomocity » Tue Aug 15, 2006 9:37 am

At this point wareynolds, I'm debating on posting my drivers up online somewhere. I have to check out the legality of such, so ill check on that and get back to the community. If you've done all the mods that I've listed or that has been listed in the borisbadenov method and you still get nothing, my advice is to play around with the drivers to try and see if it works. For me it was the LCD string that got the QE/CI support working from the blsod (Black screen of death at this point, lol). For others, just editing the one or two files will make it work perfectly.

Frankly im getting sick and tired of this tearing and I'm to the point where I'm ready to write my own drivers for this card, and although ive never actually written mac drivers, i do have experience on linux and bsd with driver development and i figure it would be a good way to break into mac devel.

EDIT: for anyone that cares I just benched 89.87 on Xbench today, so the T60p really matches up well to mac hardware.

I will get you a step by step list of what I have done. Or shoudl I say to make sure I followed what you think I should have.

The thing I do not understand is the whole if we have the same machine and use the same install disk, how can we not get the same results.

The Mac reports it as a 71C4. Maybe there are several versions of the JAS 10.4.6 disk.... how can you tell on that?

I just do not know enough about the Mac or all the interaction with Kext files and the like, so I am lost.

I would love a copy of your drivers, feel free to PM me or just contact me at waltr at umich dot edu

If i get the files it would be a good way to tell if it is software or if it is something in the hardware.

Thanks.

BTW, is this the same thread you think I should be refering to on the borisbadenov method?

Questions

#48 Post by randomocity » Wed Aug 16, 2006 7:53 am

Alright first give me the step by step of what you have done, and i will compare it to mine. If i see any difference between the two methods, i will be glad to point out any problems. I may actually end up reformatting (saving the kexts that i have now to a disk) and trying again from scratch and really doing some detailed documentation. Also, I'm not sure if we are using the same install disk, as I am using the HotISO version, if that makes any difference. Also, make sure on install that you are not installing any of the unneeded files, IE the AMD base/AMD patch drivers/GMA 950 drivers. Keep the mobility ones just in case, though i dont think they are needed. I'll see what i can do about sending the drivers, expect and email shortly.

Ok, I think MaloventEvil might have said he was using the 10.4.6 Jas ISO.

I am trying to get the 10.4.6 HotISO image, but the current download speeds I am getting, well I might be done some time next week.

Anyway, here is what I did...

1. sudo mkdir /ATIBackup
2. sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* /ATIBackup/
3. sudo mv /ATIBackup/ATIRadeonX1000* /System/Library/Extensions/
4. sudo vi /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext/Contents/Info.plist

Changed to the following:

<key>IOPCIMatch</key>
<string>0x71C41002</string>
***This right here is what appears to be the problem for me. The default is 0x71C51002 If I change this file to the C4 I always get the black screen (BlSOD)

5. sudo mv /ATIBackup/ATINDRV.kext/ /System/Library/Extensions
Just forgot to copy this one back from backup.
6. sudo vi /System/Library/Extensions/ATINDRV.kext/Contents/Info.plist

Changed
<key>IOProviderClass</key>
<string>IONDRVDevice</string>
To:
<key>IOProviderClass</key>
<string>IOPCIDevice</string>

Also Changed
<key>IONameMatch</key>
<string>ATY,Wormy</string>
To
<key>IONameMatch</key>
<string>LCD</string>

7. sudo vi /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin/Contents/Info.plist

Made changes to match card (Just pasting my section and not the original)

<dict>
<key>100271C4-0000-0000-0000-000a27898d3e<key>
<string>ATIRadeonX1000GAFactory</string>
</dict>
<key>CFPlugInTypes</key>
<dict>
<key>ACCF0000-0000-0000-0000-000a2789904e<key>
<array>
<string>100271C4-0000-0000-0000-000a27898d3e</string>

8. sudo rm -Rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
9. sudo rm -Rf /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
10. sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext
11. sudo kextcache -k /System/Library/Extension
12. sudo diskutil repairPermissions /

Then I reboot and get the black screen with those colors at the top of the screen.

Do I need to do any additional hex editing in the MacOS file under the ATIRadeonX1000.kext/Contents/ directory?

Here is its info
manzanilla:/System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext/Contents/MacOS

When you boot up, do you get the grey mac loading screen?

EDIT: Either that or what looks like linux loading up with everything loading in the foreground?

EDIT2: I dont know if this makes any difference, but im running bios version 1.09

Random: Yes, I get the grey mac loading screen with the apple. After it is done is when I got the BlSOD. So graphical boot does work.

I am also running 1.09 for bios.

I think I have found the problem. Thanks to Gastro and my oops.

It can be one of two things, but have not had time to fully check.

1. BIOS settings. The display was set to analog VGA in the bios.

I do not think that was the problem though.

2. Install options. Since Gastro pointed out SSE3 was not showing I thought maybe I did not select the custom option during install. Well, I went back to check and I did. So I wanted to reinstall to see if it was a fluke.

Normally when I get to options I do not install additional languages, I take out all prionters except for the HP (as that is all I have). I also leave all patches in places except the 4 AMD ones. Lastly, I install X11 (figure I wanted it for screen settings or something)

Well this time I installed SSE3, but took out others like Radeon Mobility and X11, but left other stuff in. Now I get SSE# showing and by just chaning the ATIRadeonX1000.kext info.plist file (change 71C5 to 71C4), well it worked. I show QE and CI as supported.

So now I jst ned to figure out what was causing my problem exactly in the above.

So, still have a questions, what benefits do I get from having them supported? I still do not get ability to change resolution via the system settings. What do they do? What is the benifit to them?

So, can folks let me know what options they selected (or left out) when they did the install?

Wow I am going to try this right now! looks like a possible solution

Quartz Extreme and Core Image basically enable opengl acceleration for Quartz (i think) and allow for cool effects like the dashboard ripple

YES THAT WAS IT - major props warey, lol
I can't believe we didn't think of that. Installing those mobility drivers from the optional updates made the .kexts incompatible with the mod! The mod only works with the original, unupdated graphics drivers!!

finally

Was able to get my xbench up to 92.50 after fixing this

I figured it was that wayre, hence why i asked whether the boot screen was grey, instead of the black linux like bootscreen that you would get if the AMD base and packages are installed. I mentioned this in an earlier post, though from what it sounded like, it was ignored at first untill the SSE problem came up. Great job wayre, and I hope you enjoy your fully working ThinkMac. One more thing, try running a program in Full Screen OpenGL, does your mouse pointer go away once you go back to the desktop? I'm still having tearing issues and i was wondering if that was a problem for others as well.

EDIT: It had nothing to do with the mobility drivers btw, and everything to do with the AMD packages. I did install the Mobility drivers and i never got the problem, though i didnt install the AMD packages and the other misc files. And i think i deserve a bit of credit for this considering i posted the solution about 3 days before wayre did, if you guys check back.

I will give you all the credit as you did mention the patches, but I can say this had Nothing to do with the AMD drivers as I have never installed those.

I am trying to figure out which option it was. I just did a clean install and I can get QE and CI to be supported. The funny thing is SSE3 does not show up in system profiler again. Should I install SSE2 AND SSE3 patch?

What program can I run in full screen OpenGL?

Thanks, I guess it was the mobility drivers even though i definitely checked em off. Whatever be the case, its working and that's all that matters, no? :D As far as full screen Open GL programs, I ran doom 3 just for the sole purpose of testing, since there is a free demo and it does run naitively. As far as SSE3 not showing up, which SSE2/3 patches are you talking about? That should be installed by default and should be included in the Intel base package.

Ok, just went trhough way to many installs. It is the mobility patch/check that freaked it out. I do not need to make all the changes, just the once modification to the ATIRadeonX1000.kext that is mentioned in post 1.

I get SSE3 to show up if I select SSE#, but not SSE2 when I install.

I will try a test of doom when I can.
