installation on x60t SXGA

#1 Post by alanine » Sun Apr 15, 2007 12:55 pm

What I've got here is Jas 10.4.8 SSE2 SSE3 PPF1 PPF2 version, and the installation went pretty smoothly after a friend lent me his DVD Rom drive.

I original started without one and pretty much struggled with every possiblities. In the end OSX installed ok in VMWare 6 beta running off Slackware Linux that I have on the 3rd partition, but I had bit of trouble dumping the image to the 2nd partition, etc. etc. So the advice is: Get a USB DVD Rom drive before doing anything!

Anyway, long story short, both Jas 10.4.8 and Jas 10.4.9 Intel SSE3 Combo Update installed and booted ok. I now have a triple boot of Linux, OS X, and an empty Win32 partition (more on this later).

What is working:

SXGA: out-of-box
Intel PRO/1000 Lan: out-of-box
Battery Monitor: out-of-box
USB 2.0: out-of-box
Wacom Tablet Pen: with Khashoggi Tablet Daemon.031, and I had to re-perform the tweaking after 10.4.9 update.
Sound: with AppleHDA sound fix.
Sound button: the mute, volume up and down button actually work regarless of which OS.
Bootloader: with F8 pressed on start-up, it let me choose other partiion to boot. No more fiddling with Lilo or Grub.

What is NOT working:

Screen Rotation: third party tool like SwithResX won't do the trick.
Tablet Pen Button: no clue on setting the right click to this button.
Other tablet button: not working.
Sleep: even with 10.4.9 update, the sleep doesn't work. It went into sleep, but wake up in a reboot, showing BIOS error: hardware security system is tempered, or something like that.
Intel Wireless 3945ABG: not working.

The trick with disk partition is that the OSX partition has to be primary and bootable. I initially uesd gparted to move my Vista partition to the front of the disk, but it remained as 2nd partition intsead of 1st, which gave me countless problem including unable to boot into Vista, unable to boot Vista DVD from DVD drive, etc.etc., and I had to remove it and re-partition the hard disk. I'll try to install it again, but it appears that the Lenovo Vista DVD is an upgrade version, so it now refuses to install on my empty partition.

What I really like to have are the abilities to rotate screen and to put it into sleep and wake-up. Has anybody been successful with this with x60 in general? Someone said here in other posts that it works with x60s, I'm eager to learn how to make it work, and which kernel can do this. Thanks!

So, it's installed in VMWare? or you just start trying your installation on VMWare?

well,

i finally got osx dual booting w/ vista using EasyBCD to load Darwin off the 3rd partition. Got the ThinkVantage partition up and running again.

Here's my layout:

Partition 1: ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery 4.0
Partition 2: Vista
Partition 3: Jas 10.4.8

So, now it's booting to 10.4.8, but now I have the following problems:

1) no sound
2) no tablet recognition

Here's what's working:

1) AirPort Extreme (after installing the free update from Apple for 802.11n...google for it)
2) Bluetooth

I presume I need the drivers alluded to earlier in this thread. Will report when I know more.

I am posting my codec0 dump file (loaded linux). I tried to use the AppleHDA program to modify my kexts, but I don't see any sound still. So, any advice would be great. Thanks.

To get the sound

#5 Post by alanine » Thu May 03, 2007 8:50 am

Can't seem to remember from which post in InstanelyMac forum I saw this, but it is copied here anyway. Note that the normal beep doesn't sound right, but playing mp3s sound ok.

1. Delete AppleHDA.kext:

* In Terminal, type: sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext
* sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
* sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.kext

2) Edit AppleAzaliaAudio.kext:

* In Terminal, type: sudo -s
cd /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAzaliaAudio.kext/Contents/
vi Info.plist

<key>IOHDAudioCodecVendorID</key>
* change the string to (you must type e to enter edit mode):
<string>0x10ec0882</string>

:w
:q

cd
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAzaliaAudio.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAzaliaController.kext/Contents/
vi Info.plist

<key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key>
* change the string to:
<string>0x27d88086</string>

:w
:q

3) Clean up the system:

* In Terminal, type: sudo kextload
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAzaliaAudio.kext
* kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions/

4) Then, reboot and enjoy sound out of two channels.

Yes, I did successfully install OSX using VMWare 6 beta under Linux.

No, I didn't manage to dump the VMWare image file to my hard drive partition correctly to get it boot. It should be possible though, I just didn't do it right at that time.

So I ended up using a DVD rom drive to install Jas to my 2nd partition without VMWare.

Interesting, which wireless card do you have? I tried this update, but my Intel 3945ABG still won't get recognized.

Hi, I have the thinkpad ABGN card. I think it's an Atheros, which is the same kind that's in the PowerBook. The Intel one isn't natively support, per my understanding of the forums.

Have you found something to let you resize? I am thinking of installing Linux in a small partition also, as it seems to work reall fast, and it's nice to be able to have "instant on" access to the Internet. I guess I can delete the OSX partition and reinstall.....

Hmm...so did you use the exact same "0x10ec0882" vendor and device ID as you pasted below? I'm asking, as the vendor/device ID I got from the dump above seemed to be different. Hmmm... Okay. Will try.

"System extension cannot be used."

I did the changes EXACTLY as you pasted above, and I'm getting this error in a popup dialog box upon reboot.

"System extension cannot be used."

"The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleAzaliaAudio.kext" was instlaled improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

Any ideas?

solved

#11 Post by pupster » Thu May 03, 2007 2:57 pm

solved the problem myself...

Here's what you need to do if you get the problem I did...

http://forums.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=3441

Also, I did modify the device ID and vendor ID as I suggested above, but I didn't use the ones that were recommended by alanine.

I used

11d41981 for the vendor/device ID in the edit

Also used 27d88086 for the second device/vendor ID in the second edit.

Sound works fine, and the beeps sound fine too.

okay...tablet woes...

#12 Post by pupster » Thu May 03, 2007 4:18 pm

So, I've now tried to install Tablet support...

I used windows, and it recognizes the tablet as a "WACF008". So, I d/led Khashoggi Tablet Daemon 0.31 from:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php? ... t&p=293596

Then, I followed the instructions in the thread and did this:

Edit info.plist:
/system/library/extensions/Apple16X50Serial.kext/Contents/PlugIns/Apple16X50ACPI.kext/Contents/Info.plist
change IONameMatch string:
PNP0501 to WACF008

Clear kext caches by removing the following files:
/system/library/Extensions.kextcache
/system/library/Extensions.mkext

Copy kkTabletDaemonStartupitem from the downloaded archive to /library/startupitems

Rebooted

Also did:

To get inkwell cracking all you have to do is install TabletMagic (http://tabletmagic.sourceforge.net) - > go to System Preferences -> TabletMagic -> go into Extras tab -> click Enagle Ink. Then go System Preferences again -> Ink -> Enable handwriting recognition.

The problem is...nothing happens after I do all this. So, I tried to start the kkTabletDaemon manually (took it outta startup). Here is the problematic output:

TabletkhashDaemon $Revision: 0.31 $
2007Khashoggi ...

Interesting, as I'm using 0x10ec0882 for the first one, and it works fine. Maybe I'll try 11d41981 and see if it'll fix the beep.

Among Vista, OS X and Linux, actually OSX is the fastest one to boot, only 35 secs, Vista is the slowest, 50 secs or so, and I have 2GB ram.

Linux configuration for X60t takes some effort too. The latest i810_drv.o video driver isn't very stable as I found it occassionally unable to wake up from sleep, and the stable intel_drv.o is painfully slow at vertical rendering after screen is rotated.

But I don't know any tool that'll let you resize HFS+ partition.

IMHO, the Lenovo backup partition is of no use, maybe you want to throw it away.

Hmm...I think we might ave different Wacom types...I changed it to WACF004 and now it doesn't even see the port...Changed it back.

Are you basically ONLY running the Khaggi tablet daemon? I'm confused...do you need both that AND TabletMagic? It seems that TabletMagic also has a daemon, much like Khaggi...

TabletMagic doesn't work with X60t. You can turn on Apple's own inking tool, but it has memory leak and sucks at performance.

Khaggi should get your Wacom recognized by the system, and at least the pointing and clicking should work.

IMHO, the Lenovo backup partition is of no use, maybe you want to throw it away.[/quote]

On my t60 osx boots in 15 seconds. VISTA - soonest -35sec, longest - 90, UBUNTU fiesty - more than a minute.
