x40 sluggish when on battery...only on batt.!!
hi there,
so i got 10.4.8 and .9 to work on my x40. the speed is very very good, i'm very happy with the system. but i cannot make it the main OS on x40 due to the fact that when it boots on battery it bearly crawls...i mean is that slow! if i boot it plugged into a/c and then run on battery, no pb!
anyone has any idea what can i do?
thanks,
dorin

Could be that SpeedStep is somehow enabled. Try using CoreDuoTemp or a similar utility to check what the processor speed is when the battery is unplugged.
(I don't recall this problem with my X40, but I never got any sort of power management working on it).

coreduotemp is pretty "cool"! it showed that my processor is running currently at 2.3ghz....very interesting when it can only go to 1.4ghz...
hwo can i check if the speedstep is enabled? from bios i put it to max perf when on battery, but still same result....
thanks,
dorin

On my z60t i experienced a similar thing when on battery. The pentium m speedstep setting would cut the processor speed more than half. About this Mac on battery would display 800Mhz vs the 2.0Ghz when plugged in!
I went into the bios and under the power settings I made some changes and now if I'm on battery it performs just as if it was plugged in...
good luck.

My X31 performs the same way on battery. Good catch on the BIOs settings, will play around with it some more.
Funny thing is that it boots that way as well when I take the battery out, and run on AC only. Gets to the Apple screen, and then no HDD activity. Put the battey back in, and it boot normal.

The fix for this problem is to fork over 10$ and register a copy of CoolBook. It allows you to speedstep, and fixes the battery performance issue that plagued my thinkpad as well. It's well worth the 10$, just make sure you load the macbook smbios so everything will run smoothly. Cheers.
