Thinkpad speedstep problem - Busy spinning icon on batteries

Hi, im running Kalyways 10.5.1 on my thinkpad X31.
When plugged in the mains everything works and the cpu is reported in the system profiler as 1.6Ghz which is the full speed rating. No problems - everythings nice.
If i unplug the mains power the system still runs fine. But if i boot without mains plugged in the system becomes unusable. It will boot fine all the way to the desktop but the rainbow coloured spinning disk appears and the laptop will not react to anything.
Anybody had this issue ? Anybody know a way to fix this issue ?
Im thinking maybe theres a way to trick os-x into thinking its running off the mains ?
As from what i have managed to read it seems to be a "Speedstep" problem.
Ive tried all different combinations in the bios like : Disable Speedstep , Maximum Performance,
But nothing changes - if the mains aint plugged in it becomes unusable.
Any suggestions folks ?
Theres Pizza on its way to whoever can fix this problem
