OS X 10.5.1 Kalyway Succesful install on T42.

#1 Post by Mace » Sat Feb 09, 2008 3:23 pm

First off let me get my stats out there:

ThinkPad T42
1.7 Ghz
1.5GB RAM
40GB 5400pm
14.1" 1024x768 screen
Atheros Wireless (according to Windows)
Ultra Nav.

My first install of OS X on a physical box. I played around awhile ago with VMware Workstation and os x before I bought my first iMac in October. I just got a new T61 for work and had the T42 around for basically nothing. I figured I would mess around with it and see what I could do.

Anyway,
I tried the JAS 10.4.8 and for some stupid reason windows would not let me boot from the CD.
I got frustrated and found the Kalyway CD and dl'ed that as well.
So, I get that all situated and same thing. No boot, windows can not see any data on any of the 5 DVD's I burned. I put it in my Mac and could see everything fine.

So,
I ended up popping in a Ubuntu 7.10 cd in to get the disk management software, and just whacked the drive totally and left it unformatted. I then put the kalyway cd in (I run leopard on my Imac so I wanted to start with that first) and started to load.
A few tries later and I was looking at a desktop that was familiar to me (with the exception of the weird wallpaper and orange finder window)

Things I tried.

SSe2 and GUID. No luck.
SSe2 and MBR. These are the settings that I personally had to use.

Issues:

No battery, no wireless, sleep etc. When I leave it on and walk away for awhile, it freezes up and I have to reboot.

For some reason I have to leave the DVD in. I can't find anywhere in the forums that give a solution to this. Whenever I take it out and reboot, I get a black screen and cursor. Don't even get a chance to hit f8.

The middle button (blue one) on the touch pad doesn't work. I use this to scroll in my everyday surfing.

Wireless:
I tried editing the kext and for some reason this just does not work for me. The correct text is in there, and I follow the directions for kext editing from another post on this site and I am just not having any luck. Does anyone have a good set of instructions, where I don't have to jump to 15 different posts? I know people get testy answering the same questions, but there have been so many posts, and they are easily lost in the sea.

Also,

I just tried to install a few apps, and iWork doesn't... well work.. I am also unable to mount quite a few .dmg files that I can on my "real" mac.

Originally I wanted to install Kalyway 10.5.1 on mine, but after several attempts I found it to be way too buggy, so it was JaS' 10.4.8 for me. After much frustration, trial and error, I have almost everything working except the sleep function; wireless works but it can only connect to unsecured and WEP networks, so no WPA (yet).

I didn't have any boot issues with JaS', was your BIOS set to boot from the optical drive?

Also were you using the vanilla or hacked kernels?

Finally, I wouldn't expect the scroll button on the UltraNav to work properly until someone makes a driver for it, or unless they somehow port the Windows version...

Yes, the boot order is DVD rom, usb, hard drive, network.

But, when I make the hard drive before the dvd it just stays at the cursor.
I tried this:

Without any luck, I dont have the /usr/misc/script.sh.

I tried the JAS 10.4.8, loaded fine but my screen looked like someone was pressing really hard on it. Needless to say the video was not working, and looking like it was doing actual damage.
