USB problem on JaS 10.5.4

I have a thinkpad t43. This installed fine, but I am having a problem with my USB ports. I need to have a device connected at boot or else the OS doesn't see them. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem on my R61i with Kalyway 10.5.2 installed. USB mouse works fine, it's just flash drives will not mount without a restart.
