10.5.5 and v5200

Anyone running this setup? I have a 2623 and have successfully installed 10.5.5, but am stuck on QE/CI. I am able to get 1600x1200 if I remove all of the Radeon drivers, but when I try and edit the ATIRadeonX1000.kext to have the correct device ID, nothing changes.

So far, I have 0x71C41002 in my IOPCI of the above kext, and 1600x1200x32 in my /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

Any pointers, modified kexts, etc. would be most appreciated. I found this site:
http://www.jmarckel.net/hackintosh
which has a lot of info, but uses the v5250 and doesn't specify which version of 10.5 he's using.

Thanks!

Hi,

Are you still on 10.5.5? I can make the correct kexts for you, probably. Please post your EDID here, and give me your card's ID (I think it's 0x71c41002).

I'll help you out, and explain to all the others who are stuck with this problem.

That would be fantastic! I am still on 10.5.5, though I may be upgrading to .5.6 soon, so kexts for both would be excellent, or a how-to. The only step I was really worried about on that site I linked to was the one where he replaces:

Code: Select all

Replace
74 42 0F 87 A5 00 with
EB 42 0F 87 A5 00
Couldn't figure out where EB came from, checksum, etc. Anyway, help would be most appreciated. Device ID is 0x71C41002 and EDID for my BOE-Hydis UXGA panel is below:

Code: Select all

00ffffffffffff0030ae464000000000
000f0103801e1678eabd3091544f8b26

Thanks!

Hi,

thanks for the info. I made a set of kexts for you the same way I made mine. Would you care to try these out?

http://rapidshare.com/files/177248907/1 ... 0.zip.html
or
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ESVXSZLL

Install them using kext helper b7 all at the same time, then reboot. In case you get a back screen on boot, don't worry and just turn the computer off and try booting again.
If you get no luck, boot using -x (safe mode) to not load the ATIX1000 kexts, or boot using -s to remove the ATI extensions, like so:
rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1*
rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATIInject.kext
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext

and reboot using -f

Let me know if these work out for you!

finetuned,
Thanks very much. So far I have QE/CI working and hardware accelerated, at least according to System Profiler. I do get some artifacts from the mouse, most notably when clicking something, it will leave a small tear/residue of what was displayed previously. Otherwise, everything looks good, will try and test more thoroughly...

Hi,

Do you get a transparent menu bar, the ability to change your resolution, etc?

I don't get artifacts, but I believe those usually come from ATIInject. Will try to find out more about it.

menubar transparency: none that I can see

only one resolution listed in system preferences -> display

thanks

Okay, seems like you don't get Core Image / Quartz GL / Quartz Extreme, which would indicate a problem with ATIRadeonX1000.kext

I'll get back to you later, if I find out more...
Weird that the V5200 is such a different beast than the V5250....

wanted to give an update. I misunderstood what menubar transparency was exactly (new to OSX, thought it was window title bar transparency), and I do in fact have that, as well as the option to toggle it in System Preferences. Still only 1 resolution.

thanks!

@ finetuned, will these custom kexts work on 10.5.6?

Edit: I answered my own question. They work but you'll get mouse tearing. Any fixes for that?

My EDID exactly matches psyences' so I thought that since I'm also on 10.5.5, that I'd try out those kextes. As far as I can tell there appears to be no difference to what I had prior (I've still got lots of mouse tearing).

-----
BACKGROUND

After updating to 10.5.5, I edited com.apple.boot.plist in order to set my screen resolution and colour depth (1600x1200x32). I also edited the ATIRadeonX1000.kext to add my device and vendor ID (0x71C41002). (I was following bozillas tutorial - http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=76892).

I decided to not continue with part 2 of bozillas tutorial (the part where you encode your EDID into the ATIinject.kext) since mine was the same as psyences' and a kext was already available - I installed all the kextes provided... maybe I should have just installed the ATIinject one --> See EDIT below.
-----

After installing finetuned's kext package the Graphics/Display section of About This Mac reports - Quartz Extreme: Not Supported. Although it appears to recognise my video card now.

Not sure how to solve the mouse tearing issues, at first I thought it may be the EDID values not matching exactly (but they do). Perhaps its a small hardware difference. [edit: seems that psyence also has this problem...]

EDIT: Well I reinstalled my original 10.5.5 versions of all the files except ATIinject.kext (since I never had ATIinject.kext to begin with) and now About This Mac reports - Quartz Extreme: Supported. However I've still got mouse tearing... I'll probably take a shot at continuing bozillas tutorial, see if that yields anything. [edit: maybe not... can't figure out what to do, lol - I've since removed the ATIinject.kext too.].

Oh btw, im using the leo4all distro, updated to 10.5.5.
