10.5.6 Works Great on T60p (with VGA)

My T60p (2007-AD1) works great with 10.5.6 - with a single caveat.

As long as I start up (and wake up from sleep) with a live vga connection plugged in, everything works perfectly. If I do either without the vga connected, I get artifacts and if I use particular parts of the GUI - such as the fanned out version of the Downloads folder from the Dock, my system hangs. Even if I do not use these specific elements of the GUI, my system will eventually hang regardless.

What is different with the system if the vga is connected? Is there a different portion of the ATIInject that is used?

Not a bad workaround, but wondering if I can get over this last hurdle.

Thanks for the thought - tried that, same result.

What is really odd is that if I boot up w/o vga, then connect it and run "Detect Displays" then everything works fine. If I use any qe/ci, then it hangs the system. (or at least the graphical interface.)

What files are modified with a call to Detect Displays?
