Noob questions

#1 Post by Scott R » Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:05 am

I'm a long-time Thinkpad owner. I really like the trackpoint (pointing stick) and there aren't many other options that even offer that. I know that some of Dell's business-oriented laptops had it - I'm not sure if they still offer any/many that do. I'd like to get started with iPhone development, and I know that the development tools only run on OSX, so I have a few questions:

1) Is the trackpoint functional with OSX or only the touchpad?

2) Will the iPhone development tools work on a "hackintosh"?

3) Aside from hardware costs, what software costs are involved? Is the official OSX software only an upgrade?

4) I currently have the following Thinkpads - would either of these work especially well? If not, what can I buy fairly cheap online that should meet my needs?
- X40 (2386-HCU)
- T23 (2647-8PU)

1) Yes, if you choose proper PS/2 kext during installation.
2) Yes.
3) Well, there's no "official" installation package, you can't use regular OSX DVD, you need pirated and patched installation from "places", but they are free an illegal.
4) X40 most probably will work, but you need to read more, some people shared their experience.

I'm in the exact same situation - I want to start developing with iPhone SDK and I have an X40 that I love. Scott, if you find out anything, please share.
