instead of mirror mode it is possible to attach external display, power on and close lid.
Chameleon, boot sequence and OS X come up on external display (at 800x600) for me.
I can change to appropriate 1600x1200 for my display after login in Prefs->Display.
What is nice is on next boot standalone the resolution on the lcd is still at the native 1400x900.
Of course this requires some kind of external kbd and mouse. USB is one friend here. Makes me want to fix the non-functional bluetooth.
