Probably, the following link would fix the SpeedStep issue: http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2009/12/ ... ative.html

It might also fix the frequency issue.

You can post the instructions here and also ZIP instructions and files into an archive and upload to Sendspace and post a LINK to that here.

Yong:

Excellent progress.

Would you please post a brief summary of what is working and what is not in the list of components in W510?

CPU: Intel Core i7-720 (all 8 threads on 4 cores working)?
GPU: Quadro FX880M (full hardware accelerated 1600x900 CI/QE support)?
keyboard?
mouse?
trackpad?
All USB ports including eSATA?
Firewire port?
DVD drive (read/write)?
Ethernet?
Wireless - obviously, this will not work as it is an Intel one. I don't know whether this can be replaced with a Dell 1520 wireless as it is fully supported in SL 10.6.x. Silencer or anybody: Would you please chime on this?
webcam?
power management?
battery along with battery indicator?
sound?
sleep and wakeup?
internal mic?
any other?

I know you have already replied with a long system summary. But, wanted to consolidate all in this reply. The only stuff that doesn't work at this time is the Intel Speedstep and the frequency for which I think Silencer or somebody can definitely help you with that. I think Tony just released iBoot Supported - http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/. Do you want to try this and let us know? This may have built in support for Intel Speedstep and the frequency issues.

Other than this, we're all feverishly waiting for a step by step guide from you to get this going.

Thanks for all your hard work!!!

haven't tried are express card ,fingerprint reader

just tried vga display output ,it works but in extend dispay mode and has 1080p option ,I can't see the menu ,don't know how to change it to dispay only on TV.

Yong, SpedStep is very easy to fix with Legacy Kext. You don't really need to mess with DSDT here (only for C-states and not necessarily). Check my guide, full instructions about SpeedStep and Legacy Kext are there.

Don't mix things. Darwin - is part of vanilla OSX, it's what makes OSX to run on Intel hardware. But in order to boot Darwin, you need have EFI - a hardware/software part on vanilla Macs. Our PCs don't have it, so we run Chameleon, which emulates EFI and makes Darwin/OSX believe that they are running on real Mac hardware.

Chameleon is open source, so a lot of bootloaders are using it. You are probably already running Chameleon, if you pause booting on OS selection screen, you should see bootloader version in the top left corner. I suggest to use AsereBLN version of Chameleon, it is the most optimized version with a lot of great features to make out hackintosh life easier.

Thanks ,I'm really a noob about this ,I deleted my Daewin bootthink Mac OS snow ,and install a Chameleon one according the link ,but everything messed up, it's running in x86 mode ,not x64 anymore ,and the kernel is still Darwin. I don't know about vanila ,what's that?

Yong, can I ask you again to go and read my guide? Otherwise my explanations are simply pointless. You cannot blindly mess with bootloaders without knowing what you do.

Any updates on a method that will work with the w510?

My problem is that the EFI disk I used only works with discs and my disc is a retail disc (aka not modified for mbr partitions). My usb chameleon stick reboots when trying to boot from my modified usb installation disc. I am assuming this is because I need a DSDT or a modified kernel.

Yong, please update.

You should prepare a custom installer on a USB stick using your original DVD. You cannot simply boot from Chameleon to install DVD, you need to use a few custom kexts to allow OSX to boot on non-Apple hardware. Check myHack installer here.

I know, I have a custom Chameleon 256MB USB stick and a custom 8 GB stick with the 10.6 DVD image restored and modified for GPT. I know for a fact that my modified USB installer works because I used it on my brothers laptop. The problem is that my chameleon stick must not have the right kexts or DSDT file to load the installer. Everytime I choose to boot from the USB disk, it restarts or looks like it is going to start, but gets stuck at "waiting for root device" (or something along those lines)... indicating the USB drivers probably are wrong.

Any ideas?

FakeSMS.kext is missing. Check myHack Installer guide on how to prepare all necessary kexts and read a few guides on this forum.

I install Chameleon again .now everthing is ok now ,before cpu is not support by bootthink ,and the time seconds is way too fast , 10 seconds faster than the normal within i minute ,and this leads my vlc player plays videoes way too fast too ,that sucks ,that's why I deleted bootthink ,and use Chameleon again, I downloaded HJMac(similar to iboot) boot cd ,and use 8G USB disk(snow 10.6.3 inside) to install mac os ,and enter into mac os install Chameleon ,and it boots with Mac os & Win 7. that's easy ,sorry about my poor english,
now my benchmark x64 scores is 5200 ,much faster than before ,really happy about Chameleon install.the time is correct now ,so does vlc player. Thanks everyone's suggestions ,without you guys I can't make my w510 perfect.

Excellent news Yong.

Are all devices working now w/ Snow Leopard including Speedstep, thermal, battery etc? Is it 100% hackintoshed notebook except for the wireless card?

Would you be able to write a step by step guide for n00bs like me and post it here?

Thanks.

I was able to get a pretty good install using the following steps:
  • Boot into retail CD using an empire efi boot disk
  • Install onto a GPT disk
  • Boot into install using empire efi boot disk
  • Update to 10.6.3
  • Install kernel 10.3.1 using this guide: http://www.tonymacx86.com/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=1402 (I used the alternate method)
  • Install MyHack using default settings
This gives everything except wireless. Does anyone know what wireless card we could replace the built in Intel 6300 with? I heard that the BIOS might lock 3-rd party ones out. Is this true?

Hi nabs,

thanks for your quick guide.
Couple of questions:

1. Which version of Empire EFI?
2. Where is the GPT disc?
3. MyHack - does it require a existing Mac? I don't have one.

Please advice.

Btw, I'm also thinking of getting W710 which has a wider screen (17'' inch). More screen real estate. The GPU is Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M. Will this work fully hardware accelarated CI/QE on SL?

Thanks.

So, I finally got Snow Leopard MBR to install correctly on my w510. I grabbed all the kexts from the Empire EFI disc, and the mach_kernel from Empire EFI disc (without this, my w510 reboots) to finally get it to install. Now that I have it installed, I have a working keyboard, tracpad and webcam... but that is about it. I would like to get the ethernet port working and graphics acceleration working.

So, I guess my questions are, what do I need to do to get my ethernet port and graphics acceleration working? Is there a way to get my w510 to boot with the vanilla kernel (I know I was told that I did not have the fakeSMS.kext before... I think that refers to fakeSMC.kext... but I definitely have the latest fakeSMC.kext from netkas, and I still have a problem). I am not currently using a DSDT.aml file, could someone provide one for me? Are there kexts that will make my USB 3.0 ports work correctly?

Also, nabs posted that he installed the 10.3.1 kernel using a guide, what exactly does that mean. Do you lose all the functionality of 10.6.3 by booting the 10.3.1 kernel. Is it worth it?

Thanks,
Mark

I'm kind of busy now ,my wife is coming soon ,I have to find a apartment to move , mine is not very good , 50% chance kernel panic after restart , frustrating. I didn't change a lot ,just install snow by a 8g usb disk ,and put some kexts inside I was refered before.

If you're looking for a full length PCI mini card, get an Atheros AR5BXB72 - same as what Apple uses.
For a half height card, get a Dell 1510 PCI-E WIRELESS WLAN Half-Height Mini card.

They will both come up without any hack's to the kexts - ie they are naively supported by OS X

For the second part of that question, yes - IBM locks out - or only supports some cards.

This is my first post in this forum, so I'm less than a noob. First, thank you all for your hard work on this issue. It has inspired me to order a W510 which will be arriving in two days. After reading this thread, I'm left with the impression that it is possible to have a fully functional W510 hackintosh except maybe w/r/t USB 3.0 as long as one swaps out the wireless card or modifies the BIOS.
Neflem wrote:If you're looking for a full length PCI mini card, get an Atheros AR5BXB72 - same as what Apple uses.

I googled the AR5BXB72 and came up with what looks like an Airport Extreme card. The W510 will be replacing my MBP 3,1 which has a failing internal display. Otherwise, the computer, including the Airport card, is functional.

Can I transplant my Airport card to the W310 as a temporary fix? If so, is it fair to assume that since I was able to find Vista drivers for my Boot Camp partition, there won't be any problem using the Airport card with Windows 7? I'll need to dual boot as getting the hackintosh running sounds like more than a day's or even several day's of work.

Finally, is there any advantage to getting the Dell half-height mini card? I believe it costs about $20 on E-Bay which is 1/3 the price of an Airport card.

Thanks for your help.

Max

I move to a new place ,use. half a month got my Internet work ,but after that I update drivers and bios by thinkvantage tools , it's bricked, stupid lenovo, I update bios from windows by other brand latops ,never had problem ,even failed they can recover to the old bios, but thinkpad can't ,I have to wait theirs box to send to me, let them fix it, so upset.
